I noticed that this excellent ebook is currently on sale for $2 on Amazon. I highly recommend it, especially if you're interested in history, diverse perspectives, and the fight for equality.

Carlotta Walls LaNier recently spoke at the library I work for about her experiences as one of nine Black students who integrated into Central High School in the 50s. Her book does an amazing job conveying in great detail the difficult fight she and her companions faced. It's a painful, heartbreaking, and powerful read that puts into perspective events that weren't all that long ago. #BlackHistory #ColoradoLocal

Carlotta is in elementary school when she is called the n-word on a bus in segregated Little Rock, Arkansas. This is her mother‘s advice.

I think it‘s good advice for us all.

Traci1 It's so hard to do, though. 4y

obviateit I‘m really struggling with this today. ❤️ 4y
BookishMarginalia @KVanRead Me too. One good thing about being a teacher: you have to keep going and keep functioning and model persistence and patience. But omg 4y
BookishMarginalia @Traci1 @CaffeineAndCandy @obviateit I‘m grieving — I honestly cannot fathom how half the country can think this behavior is okay. I can‘t wrap my head around it. 4y
Traci1 @BookishMarginalia it was disappointing but maybe more forgivable in 2016 when one could claim ignorance. But we've got 4 years of evidence now. Anyone who doesn't see it is willingly choosing not to. They're putting their wants ahead of others' needs. It's disgusting. Sorry. Maybe I won't be able to find patience after all. I'm sad and angry and over all the excuses. 4y
obviateit @BookishMarginalia same. I‘ve been repeatedly triggered by so many people accepting/excusing his textbook narcissism these past few years. 😔 4y
BookishMarginalia @traci1 I hear you. And I agree. It also scares me, this utter disregard for science, basic decency, and even facts. To embrace conspiracy theories and just plain falsehoods is unconscionable. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I chose this audiobook for the prompt “author local to me”. I love about 45 minutes from Little Rock. I have heard bits and pieces about the Little Rock Nine over the years. I decided with everything going on in our country today that I wanted to hear about the past. The author did a wonderful job of telling her story and including the other eight teenagers.
