One of the rare cases of movie is better than book.I saw Juho Kuosmanen‘s adaptation&was not aware that he‘d taken some liberties which make the film compelling&emotionally engaging. The book is not convincing bc the girl character is too aloof&the man-much older than her-a despicable misogynist, antisemitic drunk who beats his wife.In the movie the girl and man are the same age&he‘s rough&rude but also kind&gentle&thus believable that 👇

Anna40 they connect&she‘d develop feelings for him. I wanted to see that tenderness&that bond&connection in the novel but it seems impossible to me that any sane woman could connect with that scumbag. What I really enjoyed was the descriptions of landscape&the Soviet Union, the journey from Moscow to Mongolia was what kept me from bailing. 6mo
CogsOfEncouragement I won this book in a readathon years ago and did not like it at all. I didn‘t know there was a movie, but I sure wouldn‘t have wanted to watch it. lol 6mo
Anna40 @CogsOfEncouragement I don‘t blame you, I wouldn‘t have bought the book if I‘d known … the film has flaws but I loved the relationship&connection between the characters & was curious to see how the author conveyed that in writing … well she didn‘t. The man is a scumbag I‘d be scared of. I‘d certainly wouldn‘t want to hang out or spend several days&nights! alone in a compartment with him 6mo

My first read of 2024 was my last read of 2023 that I just couldn't finish 😂but that's okay I was also trying to not overstress about my reading during the holidays.
And since I finished this one this year, it fits I to this year's challenges 😁

@BarbaraBB thanks for tagging me because I am so doing this challenge again! #pantone2024 #fromthetbr #taylorswiftreadingchallenge

BarbaraBB Love it too, this challenge 🌈 10mo

Eyvind wasn't that compelling as a protagonist. I even found him very unpleasant in parts. I did enjoy the historical aspect of it and all the lands they traveled. I was expecting it to be a bit heavier with the magical/supernatural element of the story, but it was very limited and wasn't explored much.

I can't say I disliked it, but I really wish some parts were explored more.

Commander Gray Pierce, and Sigma, joined by a pair of Vatican historians, race to uncover a truth tied to the fall of the Roman Empire, to a mystery bound in the roots of Christianity's origins, and to a weapon hidden for centuries that holds the fate of humanity. I love the Sigma Force series but not this one.

EadieB I found the book to be too convoluted and didn't understand the science that was presented in the book and I found it therefore boring. I loved that Seichen met up with her mother and did enjoy that aspect of the book. I'm just going to mark it as a one off writing for James Rollins and move onto the next book. I did give him 3 stars for writing the book. 1y

Nominated for the 2024 Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award, this will be a fun one for the kids. I think we may have to start by talking about where the Gobi is and what a legend is. I hope I don't get parent calls about nightmares like when I read Little Red Riding Hood. I know some students will LOVE this. #endpapers #maps #mongolia

I'm glad I saw your review of this one, @Jari-chan ?

A wonderful little book, deeply researched and told plainly, as befits the worldly-naïf MC. It's marketed as a historical fantasy, but the second half of that description is somewhat misleading, I think. The story is presented within the world view of its protagonists, who believe in ghosts, magic and the ⬇️

Bookwomble ...supernatural, so naturally those elements appear, but they are part of life, not apart from it.
The story follows 7th century Icelander, Eyvind, in his travels into Central Asia, his experiences with the peoples he meets along the way, his bonding with an unnamed spirit mare, & his journey home with his precious cargo of Mongolian horses. Part Secret History, part Just So story, part Culture Hero mythic journey, all wonderfully fascinating. 4🐎

This book includes it all: history, horses, religion, myths, travelling. I was surprised to meet characters from this book again on Wikipedia when doing researches after reading, I did not expect them to be true historical figures. There's so much in this work that I actually feel a bit overwhelmed. And this on only so little pages. It sure is a lot to take in. But a very wise book it is.

Bookwomble This sounds like just my thing! 😊 1y
Jari-chan @Bookwomble Then I hope you'll enjoy it 😊 1y
PirateJenny This is just up my alley. The author is also a medievalist (I just discovered) so a definite bonus 1y
Jari-chan @PirateJenny That really is a bonus! 1y
