pick
This #BookSpinBonanza pick certainly stirred my passion for Steinbeck! It‘s the sweet sequel to Cannery Row, later adapted into a Rodgers & Hammerstein musical. (Too bad it flopped🤭) Since Sweet Thursday followed his steamy saga East of Eden, Steinbeck says he relaxed and just had fun writing this one—and it shows! I adored revisiting the Cannery clan and also Steinbeck‘s snarky sections to goad his critics. 😉🙌🏻

TheAromaofBooks I've only read Grapes of Wrath! What is your favorite Stienbeck? 4y
MemoirsForMe @TheAromaofBooks Can you believe I haven‘t read that one yet? Top faves are East of Eden and Travels with Charlie. But I love them all. 😉 4y
TheAromaofBooks It's been a long time, but if I remember correctly, the majority of the book is in alternating chapters between the actual story and just sort of random stuff about the Depression, and I seem to recall liking the Depression chapters more than the story haha 4y

MemoirsForMe @TheAromaofBooks The subject matter and number of pages scare me, but I will dive in...someday. ☺️ 4y
TheAromaofBooks Oh, it was sad. SO sad. But I had read it right after reading a few other classics, including The Great Gatsby and Babbit. I hated both those books because the characters in them had wonderful lives & squandered them by whining & complaining about EVERYTHING. Grapes is also depressing, but the family WANTS to find work, find a home, be productive citizens - their circumstances are beyond their control, which made a big difference in how much ⬇ 4y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) I liked & empathized with them, as opposed to the characters in the other books where they deserved to have terrible things happen to them because they sucked as people & were whiny babyfaces. 4y
rubyslippersreads I‘m a huge fan of musicals, but this is one I haven‘t heard of. 4y
MemoirsForMe @rubyslippersreads Probably because it was one of the few O&H flops. I did find a CD of the soundtrack on EBay. I might have to get it. 😉 Hope you‘re doing well over there! 4y
MemoirsForMe @TheAromaofBooks Now I‘m glad I missed Gatsby and Babbit. 😂I‘ve been staying away from it because it‘s so sad. I haven‘t even watched the movie. Maybe the audio will be a little easier to handle, when I‘m in the mood for a heart wrenching read. 4y
TheAromaofBooks I skipped a lot of “classics“ in high school because I was home schooled and it was pretty easy to convince Mom that reading a bunch of depressing books wasn't really going to do anything for me, especially since I was already such a voracious reader lol So I've tried to come back to them as an adult, but honestly for ones like Gatsby and Babbit, I haven't been convinced that I missed anything! 4y
MemoirsForMe @TheAromaofBooks Litsy brought more classics into my reading life and I‘m grateful for that. But you‘re right, not all of them made me smile. 😬 4y
