…other people, when what they needed was a bit of moral pressure on themselves to ask: Why are we doing this at all? If we must have a war, is this really the best way of fighting it? Are these ‘sacrifices‘ (another convenient ‘religious‘ word; people spoke of ‘the final sacrifice‘, forgetting that in the Bible human sacrifice was condemned over and over again) the best way both of winning the war and of preparing ourselves (cont. in comments)
Although this is billed as a mystery, the reason I loved this book was Thumps Dreadfulwater, his friends, and the town of Chinook. I felt like I was solving a mystery with the group of retired gents I see at the coffeehouse in the morning. Wonderful Canadian author and great example of the right book at the right time.
Started this one recently. So much information on the Bible! And it‘s a chonker too 😁
