These handful of fables set in #CapeVerde are good, not great. An introduction describing whether they are based on actual fables or the author‘s imagination, and if actual, who was the target audience and how long have the stories existed (at least one is quite modern) would go far in elevating the book. One fable, as told by the narrator to a boy, with a somewhat descriptive sexual act made me wonder! The last one was the best about girl ⬇️

Cinfhen Wow!! You‘re really almost there! I kind of gave up on finding books for some of the lesser known countries. Fantastic 🙌🏻 2y

I‘ve started this ebook. I wasn‘t very fond of the book I read for #CapeVerde for #readingafrica2022 so I decided to read this one as well. It‘s short so I should finish it tonight

I‘ve had a number of countries in Africa for which I‘ve read two or more books so I may just keep on going for the rest of the year 😉

BarbaraBB That is awesome! 2y

This book is a little hard to describe. It focuses on a small village, Serrano, and it‘s tight-knit inhabitants, letting us see their values and superstitions. It focuses on the women, and is in fact the first published novel by a woman in #CapeVerde. I enjoyed this.

Librarybelle What an awesome distinction - first book to be published by a woman in Cape Verde! 2y

I‘ve spent the evening scouring Amazon for free ebooks for #readingafrica2022. Some are free with a Prime subscription and some through a Kindle Unlimited subscription. I‘ll have to add some of these to the Litsy database.

Countries covered from top to bottom: #Lesotho, #GuineaBissau, #CapeVerde, and #Algeria. @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

I originally thought this book was a mildly humorous story revealing the true nature of the deceased, which was so different than how he saw himself. I was bothered by his decision to hate his nephew mostly based on reasons he conjured in his own mind, when his nephew most likely made the ungrateful old man wealthy. But I‘ll put my reason for finally disliking the book so much in a spoiler below. #readingafrica2022 #CapeVerde

Texreader I had to force myself to keep reading after Sr. Araújo raped his housekeeper and thus beget his daughter. No way around it, he raped her. When asked about it after he‘d died, she said she wanted it. But that‘s not how it was depicted when it happened. In fact, I rather despise the author for making this excuse later in the book. The man was a self-important, despicable, ungrateful character who used women repeatedly for his own gratification. 2y
Librarybelle That‘s horrible! Thank you for your honest review. 2y

I‘m going to belabor the point that this book simply doesn‘t do paragraphs. This is happening to the point of exhaustion—a paragraph spread over four pages. One must have almost complete concentration and no distractions to read this book. Again it‘s an ok book but it‘s tedious, reading about minute decisions in the man‘s life (pages and pages about his one suit, or his buying a pair of plastic sandals). Sigh. #CapeVerde #readingAfrica2022

This isn‘t a bad read; it can be funny and interesting. But it has insanely long paragraphs in insanely long chapters. I feel like I never get a breather. Here‘s an example with a lengthy paragraph starting on one page and continuing well into the next page. I am often pausing before these long visual hurdles, which prolongs the reading pain. Dang! #capeverde #readingafrica2022 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

BarbaraBB At least it‘s a short read but you‘re right, we need some white on those pages! 2y
