The Gods Lie | Kaori Ozaki

Well illustrated, nicely paced, and very sweet, The Gods Lie is a nice stand-alone comic that will pull at your heart strings. While I wasn‘t blown away by it, I wasn‘t disappointed either. And I wouldn‘t mind seeing the anime it‘s based on.

Vertical published the book with a gorgeous cover and nice quality paper.

If you enjoy soft, sweet, somber stories about family and coming of age, this would be one to check out.

My Friend Dahmer | Derf Backderf

Disturbing and fascinating, Backderf's account of one of the most notrious serial killers was certain to be a good read. And it was. Backderf's illustrative style fits the dark atmosphere he's attempting to create. I found the author's attempts to humanize Dahmer difficult to emphasize with, but it was a intriguing viewpoint none-the-less.

I would recommend this to anyone who has a fascination with serial killers. #comicsread2018

EvieBee I really enjoyed this one. I‘d never considered what could have happened if he‘d gotten some help. So good! 6y
MoniqueChristine @EvieBee I did this one for a book club and it prompted some great conversation on nature vs nurture, mental health, and so on. 6y

Volume 2 of the series continues to have a beautiful faerie tale atmosphere, though it provides more questions than answers. Shiva seems immune to the curse. And why did her aunt abandon her in the woods? What‘s the difference between Teacher and the other dark ones they meet?

I am loving this series, even if some of the panels could use a bit more negative space. (Nagabe! Stop using so much black!)

I enjoyed Delisle‘s use of humour and light-heartedness at describing an animation gig that must have been stressful and lonely. His style of graphic memoir is very engaging, showing Pyongyang from a French-Canadian perspective—at least what he was able to see of it.

Absolutely fantastic. It‘s a solid series from beginning to end. A great translation, fantastic humour, and beautifully printed by Drawn & Quarterly. It‘s a great addition to my collection and a nice deviation from Delisle‘s more serious work. #comicsread2018

Just as cute and funny as the first book, Delisle continues to deliver humour in his less then stellar parenting techniques. Helge Dascher is back with a great translation that continues to get those comedic beats, this time she‘s joined with Rob Aspinall. It‘s a lovely time that makes me a bit nostalgic of my own childhood. #comicsread2018

Hilariously awful and a little to familiar to my own father. I really enjoyed these simple vignettes. The comedic timing is fantastic. I really have to hand it to Helge Dascher for their great translation. They really managed to get the humour across. #comicsread2018

Friends with Boys | Faith Erin Hicks

Hicks has a fun, expressive style & incredible character design. As a high-school comedy it works great. I loved seeing Maggie navigate school for the first time after being homeschooled.

There‘s a sub plot involving a ghost that really didn‘t seem necessary. There must be a less super-natural way for Maggie to come to terms with her absent mother.
But this is a minor quibble & for the most part I thought the book was fantastic. #comicsread2018

I was in love with this book when I read it four years ago but since then I‘ve read so many more comics and so many better works have come out.

Everything involving the food is lovely and makes me hungry just looking at it. But I‘m a little nervous about how Yoshinaga plans to developer the characters and their relationship. I really hope I get to see some growth from them in the coming volumes. #comicsread2018
