“It is important that cultural institutions respect the rights of copyright owners. We should never forget, however, that first, copyright exists to benefit the public good, and second, cultural institutions have long occupied a special place in copyright law, due to their missions of preserving and facilitating access to intellectual and creative works.”

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

Works —literary, musical, theatrical— published in the US in 1925 are now free to use for anyone. This article explains why that is important for our common cultural life: https://apple.news/Awq2MZYeaRhyJrTw4iUvB0g — it also has links to lists of works newly in the public domain.

This recommendation from a friend was a fun, silly read.

“Which court decisions represent ‘the law‘ for a particular contract-license or use under the copyright law depends on which court or courts have jurisdiction. The short version is that rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court apply to all citizens across all jurisdictions. The Supreme Court rules on both contract-license issues as well as copyright issues. Likewise, decisions of state supreme courts govern the parties within that state.”

Well, unfortunately my mental health took a major nose dive and most of my readathon plans went right out the window. All I‘ve felt like doing that isn‘t trying to keep up with school and work has been reading Star Trek: DS9 fanfic, with the occasional trip into one of my actual books. But at least I‘m reading I guess.

Bookwormjillk Reading is reading. Hang in there! 4y

Honestly, I don't think I've ever met a "normal" person. However, to me, normal is so boring, I might have simply forgotten them. If I remember you, then you're not normal, you are unique.

Important info on how our current system works when it comes to the arts as both artists and the control-wielding publishing giants. The author offers analysis that shows how we need to shift away from control and into open access. Technology frees us, but we spend too much time up in arms about the piddly amounts of money we believe we're losing to pirates, rather than scrutinizing the 3-5 powerhouses that are actually taking all of our money.

CampbellTaraL Overall I recommend this book but maybe in text format. While the audio narration was performed by Wil Wheaton, every single chapter and subsection includes a jarring, discordant piano string that sounds awful. 5y
