My first Barbara Kingsolver. Won't be my last. Honestly, didn't love her as a narrator, but audio was what my library had available - will read others in print.

As always, thanks to #Authoramonth2022 & @Soubhiville for introducing me to a new-to-me author!

Nikki_E I actually grew up where this takes place so I kept getting distracted by all the inconsistencies. I loved the historical stuff though. I learned a lot about the history of my birthplace. 1w

The Year in Review | Freedom Forum Media Studies Center
post image

2021 was a rough reading year for me. Like many, I found it difficult to focus.

54 books out of my Goodreads goal of 80 - setting my goal for 80 again this year. 8/12 #Authoramonth & 16/24 #Booked2021. Doing both of these challenges in 2022 - they definitely pushed me to find new authors!

So, here's to a better 2022! 🥂

Last night, fully vaccinated #NashvilleLittens gathered in @ferskner's home for the first time in nearly two years! (#stupidvirus) We typically meet up 4x/year, but COVID had obviously derailed that for a bit. Good food, GREAT conversation, being spoiled by our Secret Santas, & the same dinosaur erotica book being gifted by two different people. 😂 This was SO good for my soul - Zoom meetings weren't the same. I have missed my book people!

I have a theatre friend with whom I share a reading Venn diagram, & our overlap is science fiction. At a rehearsal last week, he plopped down next to me & said "please tell me you've read Project Hail Mary, because I HAVE to discuss it with someone." 5 minutes later, it was purchased from Audible. I don't always have good luck with fiction on audio but WOW. Ray Porter's performance was fantastic, & I will be reading more Weir.

Just started the newest Louise Penny. Here's the first page. This is my first time reading a book that references COVID. What new books have you read that have done the same? I'm sure this will be par for the course soon, just like 9/11 is.

LiteraryinLawrence Wow, that‘s jarring. I wonder if she wrote about a post-Covid current day back when we didn‘t know about Delta. 4mo
mom2bugnbee @LiteraryinLawrence Wouldn't surprise me, because this continued for the entire chapter - talking about how life (in a very small town in Quebec) had gotten back to normal after the vaccine became available. It was very surreal to read. 4mo

This is sure to disappoint many of you, but this is a bail for me. 😔 I don't enjoy any of the characters - at all - and that's required for me to stick with a book. Don't take this to mean that the characters have to be likeable - I love a good dysfunctional family story. But I just didn't enjoy spending time with any of these characters. Sorry, Ms. Hoffman. Still working my way through this book, but just had to share a behind-the-scenes picture of my 16yo before dress rehearsal as she plays Kathryn Schaub in her high school's production of Radium Girls! I'm a sucker for an epistolary novel. (This one wasn't letters, but transcripts of fictional interviews, so same vibe.) Add in historical fiction, & I'm hooked. Like Daisy Jones, I had to make sure that this band was fictional. The comparisons are inevitable, & this one holds up.

Foe those who have read it, how much did you love Virgil? Far & away my fave character - one of my all-time fave "sidekicks".

I'm still wrapping my head around this book. I don't want to say much, because I don't want to spoil it. Its such a fantastic, unique premise. It's slim - less than two hours on audio... and it's wonderful on audio. At first, I found myself wishing that the author had used different voices for the different characters. Then I realized that this is a novel in verse, which is why he was reading it the way he read it. ⬇️

mom2bugnbee This was confirmed by a short interview with him at the end - he said that he couldn't trust that meter to anyone else. You can read more about the plot, but I suggest that you don't, and just read it. ⭐⭐⭐⭐✨/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4mo

Littens - would love suggestions for #Booked2021 prompt Appalachian Noir. I abandoned Winter's Bone... is there such a thing as a story in this genre that's not quite so dark? I like thrillers, but Winter's Bone was just too disturbing for me. TIA!
