This looks so good! I remember being so disturbed at the Charlie Hebdo attack. Look forward to reading this...published today! #europaeditions

Theory of Bastards | Audrey Schulman

I loved this so much. Lit fic with elements of near-future sci-fi, cli-fi, dystopia, social science, and biology---it's hard to really describe. An acclaimed researcher who has struggled with a lifetime of chronic pain comes to a facility to study the mating habits of bonobo apes. 👇🏼

readordierachel There are so many layers to this book: chronic pain and the ways medicine can fail people who have it, the drive to procreate, the biology of attraction, the possibilities and limits of technology, the future of the planet, evolution, love, friendship, connection. It completely absorbed and moved me. I never wanted to put it down. Favorite book of the year so far. 6mo

shawnmooney @Cinfhen I laughed when I saw I was tagged in a comment about a book with this title! LOL what are you trying to tell me, Cindy? :-) This novel sounds quite interesting, but perhaps not my cup of tea. :-) 6mo
Cinfhen Ha!! I thought the title alone might sway you @shawnmooney 😘😘I‘ll keep looking for another book we might be able to read together 6mo
GatheringBooks @Cinfhen perhaps in 2020! We are also thinking of doing An International Year Of Reading in 2020 (special focus on translated titles), and the #EuropaEditions books would be perfect! 6mo
readordierachel @GatheringBooks In general, I think they are less American-centric, but this one is set there 🙃 The author is originally from Canada though. 6mo

“Survival is a very personal matter”
I read this book a month ago but this line keeps coming back to me.
This concept for survival as a starting point sheds a whole new light on old problems.
Think about it in terms of poverty or feelings towards outsiders. If survival is personal one can‘t trust others to act in a civilized manner when they are in distress, so those not in distress can justify cruel actions.

Kindred | Octavia E. Butler

1. THE RED TENT by Anita Diamant (I was skeptical about this audiobook at first, but then got hooked)

2. MIKHAIL AND MARGARITA by Julie Lekstrom Himes (published by #EuropaEditions!)

3. OCTAVIA E. BUTLER by Gerry Canavan (I read this after reading #4 and becoming obsessed with Butler)

4. KINDRED by Octavia E. Butler (this was the first book I read last year--a great book start to 2017)

GypsyKat Kindred is on my TBR shelf, I need to read it! 2y
ReadosaurusText @GypsyKat You will not regret it! When I finished the book, I was truly mad it isn't mandatory reading in school curricula. 2y
GypsyKat @ReadosaurusText Awesome! I‘m looking forward to reading it! 2y

If you have not read this book, I highly recommend it! It is a humorous thriller with a mystery surrounding an independent bookstore. What more could a book lover ask from a novel??? #someoneelsereading #fallintobooks #EuropaEditions @RealLifeReading
