I feel like the introduction beautifully summarized many of the reasons his children's book art has struck me as an adult.
Bio by Eric Carle, especially about his time in Germany covering WW2, the many sides of Germany, the heartbreak of war experienced by civilians and soldiers, no matter where they live.
The magic of a young artistically inclined person being encouraged by those around them. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality The tragedy of strict school/corporal punishment, the understandable escape found in nature, especially sweetened with early memories shared with his father, of better times.
From two editors, sections that convey their love for his books, going into why they are so successful, and how much they enjoyed working with him.
The Japanese museum curator talking about colour, art influences and the sweet little dog anecdote, might be my favourite. 2/?

Robotswithpersonality I feel like the reproduced speech holds a lot of elements in common with the bio presented earlier in the book.
Absolutely fascinated at the peeks into the creative and technical process of art for picture books, even seeing the process to turn white tissue paper into layered colour that can be then cut out to shape images, I'm still in awe of the talent for shaping, the intuitive sense (of play?) combined with art knowledge that provides such richly varied colourations within each tissue paper sheet, that then adds such depth to the resultant collage illustratons. 3/?

Robotswithpersonality Appreciate the bibliography at the end showing each book cover in full colour, it matches the spirit of the book. 4/4 1y

To think, all this colour and life was lurking in ads before it found its way to children's books.

When the art just grabs you...the colours, the pose, the facial expression, how big the candle is in proportion to the person. Feels Warm.

I always love this books! It‘s so interesting to read about the artists behind all the brilliant Disney works - sometimes also sad to read that some had quite tragic lifes. And I‘m all here for sketches and early ideas- this books are just the best 5/5⭐️

I loved this book! It tells the story of the author Ezra Jack Keats. His parents were Polish immigrants who settled in Brooklyn. Jacob (Jack) was born in 1916. A moving story of his desire to be an artist. He loved a series of photos from Life magazine of a charming brown skinned child. Twenty years later, he used the images to inspire his drawings for “The Snowy Day”.

5feet.of.fury I assumed that author was Black this whole time and I probably read The Snowy Day to 115 preschoolers 155 times each 😅 I don‘t know why but that blows my mind that he‘s Polish. 1y
DivineDiana @5feet.of.fury And he is Jewish. I hope you can read the book. It will give you an appreciation of him, not only as a writer and artist, but as a human being. 1y

AshleyHoss820 Snowy Day is one of my absolute favorite books! I love the story behind it, as well! I‘m thinking of making copies of the illustrations (I don‘t think I could tear pages out of a book) and using them as decorations! 🧡 1y
DivineDiana @AshleyHoss820 I could not tear out book pages either. There are some prints available on Etsy! Look what I found on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/listing/906837126/the-snowy-day-ezra-jack-keats?ref=share_v... 1y
