There Was Nothing You Could Do: Bruce Springsteen's “Born In The U.S.A.” and the End of the Heartland
💪 Huge fan of the film ... and now the book.
👩🎨🤯 Read this at the incredible Niki de Saint-Phalle exhibition @ The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (KCMO)
?? Summer of Steinbeck
"It has always seemed strange to me... the things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding, and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism, and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second."
??️ What's most fascinating is this is Bill Watterson's "Calvin & Hobbes" follow-up.
?? My favorite novel.
"We can shoot rockets into space but we can't cure anger or discontent."
📖 I keep returning to the mass of weasels coming down a hill. No surprise - an incredible journey and testament with every page. Herzog is pure gold and I'm itching to revisit his films.
🎧📻 Fun read. (Tweedy is 3-for-3 with books.)
🎸 Throughout an impressive punk rock checklist, I ultimately never got to know the real Thurston Moore. I'm left more unsure than ever what to think of him. (I very much prefer Kim's book.)
🛢️🦬Prepping for the Scorsese picture.
🪤After owning the book for 20 years, last week I had the good fortune to patron at Chris Ware-affiliated Quimby's in Chicago.
? I'm more of a cat dad, but this is a cute illustrated puppy song spin from a track off of Bob Dylan's magical, free-spirited "New Morning" prose.

(Please watch my favorite 2022 movie. It is so special.)
