For those of you in #Bookedintime who enjoyed the author and Indian setting, I recommend this one, set in ancient Indian, it is a myth retelling of a woman married to five brothers. The story is interesting and adventurous, and the characters are royal but likable.

This book critically engages with the Mahabharata and tries to understand the social, cultural, political, economic and religious structures of India at the time the Mahabharata is believed to have occurred.

Karve strips away the fantastical and divine layers and exposes the very real humans underneath the myth and mystery. She shows us why despite being such an ancient work of literature, the Mahabharata is still so relevant today.

I really love this book. I read it decades ago & i fell in love with Indian culture & history. I love how myths & history are interwoven
Panchaali is born from fire and is married to 5 brothers, this is her story and how they changed all things around them.
The writing is gorgeous, the characters are regal but also likable.
Only complaint is there are so many characters it can be confusing, family tree doesn't help as much as a list would have.

It had been about two years since I was forced to buy this book by my father, and I‘ve never had the interest to open it. Even when recommending, I told people to not buy this book but I never read the book myself. I regret not recommending this book tbh, I opened in few days ago and the story, the way it was written, the characters, they held me captive. I finished the whole book within 3 sittings. Highly recommend it to Indologists!
