What a beautiful and often raw account of Australia's history in the 1920's-30's. The poverty, the unemployment, the desperation, the sharing of meager rations, the dust, the heat, the bush and the bushfires. This book paints a picture of Aussie life 100 years ago and geez they had it tough.

Spent a lovely day at the beach yesterday with the family. Our restrictions have lifted to no masks outside unless you can't maintain 1.5m distance. Awesomesauce!

And my book just took a wild turn! Can't put it down atm.

This book seemed to take over all other books I was reading at the same time. Loving it.

Halfway through this awesome story.
This is definitely on par with Cloudstreet by Tim Winton which I read earlier this year and loved so much.

It follows two young friends, Jackie & Cushie, growing up across the road from one another and continues through their early adult lives, full of manipulation & misfortune, keeping them apart.
I'm only halfway and it sure has me by the short and curlies! Will they find their way back to each other again?

Started this as my chosen audiobook for the moment as I am reading Slaughterhouse 5 in paperback at night. I have it in paperback which I will pick up to read as I'm almost finished Slaughterhouse 5.
Loving this story so far. Ruth Park is such a great author. I studied her in high school as we read her books The Harp in the South and Poor Mans Orange, although I don't think i appreciated her writing at the time.
Really enjoying it so far!

What is it with me and the recent Miles Franklin winners? This is the 3rd of the last 6 years' worth that I have read and thoroughly disliked. In this case I'm not even going to bother finishing it. The writing is varying between pretentious and just plain dull and the story is not interesting enough to make me put up with it. #ozfiction

Got up in time to do Hour 12 challenge. I often say reading Carpentaria changed my life (actually just did on instagram) and it‘s true. I don‘t really know how to explain the small shift in perspective that occurred, but I‘m so glad I picked the biggest book on the reading list for that class assignment when no one else did.

What‘s that book titled a staggering work of immortal genius? It‘s on the wrong book! Carpenteria is a lyrically written, sweeping saga about the remote gulf community of Desperance, and the relations between the white and Aboriginal communities. Mysticism, anger, frustration and the deep ties of family are all here. This is a five star read - do yourself a favour and get your eyeballs on it.
