The Americans, Baby
The Americans, Baby | Frank Moorhouse
3 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
A timeless collection of stories exploring physical and psychological boundaries, some tentatively and others with vigour. In The Americans, Baby the milieu is a Sydney under-40 population who, hoping that being earnest or outrageous will make them feel real, are left saturated with anxiety instead. An inherent resistance to American cultural intrusions and the risks that those from a great powerful land such as the US take when they meddle in another culture (they can be snared, seduced, destroyed) are explored with traditional Moorhouse flair and wit. These stories are timeless in their concerns, and explore ideology, idealism, conflict, relationships and sex.

Vale Frank Moorhouse, who wrote one of my favourite books. I‘m very sad today.

Freespirit Very sad! I have never read this. I will definitely put it on my list! 2y
Centique Oh that is sad. 😔I haven‘t read anything of his - do you think this is a good one to start with? 2y
CarolynM @Centique Um, maybe? It‘s very 1970‘s - very concerned with ideology and sexuality. I really like the form - interrelated short stories that he called discontinuous narrative. His most popular books are the Edith Trilogy which are more conventional novels. The first one is 2y
Centique @CarolynM that form sounds interesting - worth a try anyway! But I know - sometimes a book just hits you at the right time and you‘re not sure it will have the same magic for the next person. 2y

#riotgrams #shortstories

Described by its author as a discontinuous narrative of stories and fragments, this is one of my favourite books. While each story stands alone, many of them are linked by recurring characters and themes. I particularly love the stories about Becker, a Coca-Cola executive from Atlanta, Georgia who is completely undone by being exiled to Australia. Please forgive the lurid cover, 1972 was like that.

Wilkie That cover is awesome! 6y
CarolynM @Wilkie In it's unadulterated form it's quite an attention grabber. I'm not sure what the attitude to nudity is in this forum but I thought it would be politic to provide some cover!😜 6y
