Just in time for the 50th anniversary, The Gales of November gives a brief history of shipping in the Great Lakes region, talks about many of the crew of the Fitz and their families, and how the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald changed shipping forever.

An incredible book. As a midwesterner, I learned so much more about the Great Lakes and this legendary ship than I ever knew.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 I‘m in Michigan but this wasn‘t on my radar until I happened to hear about an event with the author. The talk and book were both really interesting, weaving in context about Great Lakes shipping, the commerce and industry that drove it, the Edmund Fitzgerald itself and several members of the crew and their families, and even the making to the Gordon Lightfoot song. I learned a lot! #nfn #nonfictionnovember

Like anyone who has spent any time on the Great Lakes I knew about the Edmund Fitzgerald, but it was interesting to hear the whole story. I liked that the author went in depth about the lives of the men onboard and about the Gordon Lightfoot song. #NFN

#TuesdayTunes @TieDyeDude

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the mysterious sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in Lake Superior (one of the great lakes) Gordon Lightfoot has a great folk song about the sinking (The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald) and the tagged is on my TBR to read more about this mystery. Here is a short article about the basics:

RosePressedPages I can‘t listen to The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald without crying 😅 4w
Bookwormjillk I'm reading this now. It's pretty good. 4w

An interesting premise in a novel by one of my favorite authors about the cables in the oceans that transmit information over the Internet. Though we speak of “the cloud“ much of the transfer occurs underwater. Topics include the digital age, connection, COVID.

ChaoticMissAdventures I will have peick this up! The ocean lines are fascinating!! I am obsessed and not many people know about them. The concept of how long these wires are is absolutely wild 4mo

There are some beautiful lyrical sections, but overall the novel seemed a bit disjointed, though that might be intentional. I never felt like I knew any of the characters, including the MC.

In the end I‘m unlikely to remember anything expect the overwhelming majority of intercontinental communication is conveyed by underwater cables! Not satellites like we would expect.

Hands down my favorite McCann work is Apeirogon.

I loved this one when I was growing up. Rereading with my kids as an adult and it was slower than I remembered. Still thrilling once it got going and I just love the transformation of the main character from a prissy spoiled child to a brave adventurer.
