Pickpick

Originally published in 1925 - this collection of stories and verse honestly make for strange reading in 2023 - they are very moralistic (among other things - very set in gender stereotypes, written with the cadence of religious texts - but maybe that‘s just how kids texts were in the 1920s?)

Lovely illustrations tho. My favourite tale was of Nolia and the Great Tree - who became great, life changing friends after an unfortunate event.

Fairy Garden

I know a fairy garden,
Along a crooked way-
You reach it by the path of sleep,
Or by the road of play.

There all the flowers are fairy flowers,
Forever growing there.
There all the hours are winged hours,
Not weighted by despair.

All children‘s toys become alive
And folk of children‘s dreams ;
For nothing is as it should be,
But only as it seems.

Me at rare book fairs taking photos of things I want to look up later…

As a kid who was obsessed with Cecely Mary Barker‘s Flower Fairies - I would have adored Pixie O‘Harris!

This original watercolour was going for AU$7,500, painted circa 1935 and titled Seven little sea horses : “I will not have cow-fish in my garden”.

I hope it finds a home where it‘s cherished.

julieclair Oh wow! I would have loved this book as a child. And actually now, too. I have never heard of Pixie O‘Harris. But I am still a fan of Cecily Mary Barker‘s Flower Fairies. (edited) 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @julieclair, I was excited to see that my library has one Pixie O‘Harris book in its stack collection. Hopefully it‘s one that‘s packed with illustrations! Flower Fairy fan for life - for sure! The Heliotrope fairy was always my favourite. 2y
julieclair I love the Heliotrope Fairy! Also Iris and Chicory. 2y
CarolynM I remember having a Pixie O‘Harris book when I was a child. I‘m not sure if it was a contemporary edition or one from my mother‘s childhood. In those days it was it was noted with approval that she was Rolf Harris‘s aunt… 2y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @CarolynM, 🥴 that‘s not mentioned on her Wikipedia page. I‘m looking forward to my holds coming in tomorrow, I went down a bit of a rabbit hole ☺️ 2y

These are the books I managed to get for the kids. Hope they'll enjoy them as much as I'll enjoy reading them with them. Happy reading everyone 📖❤ 📚

Texreader When the kids were little I never was able to read an adult book. I was too busy reading all the kids books with the kids! These look amazing! 5y
hannah-leeloo Thank you @Texreader I love reading with them and to them at bedtime. A precious time to spend with them 💕 5y

Stitching together decades of the original X-Men adventures into one cohesive story, this project certainly sparked my interest. However, the execution leaves a stuttering narrative with no room for the events to breathe.
Possibly could have worked if expanded, but then you could always just read reprints of the original issues.

Part one of the #bookhaul from my parents‘ house. (Not pictured is LM Montgomery‘s The Story Girl) These are what I could fit in my suitcase, but there‘s another stack my mom will send to me.

We spent the weekend visiting, for the first time in four years. I spent most of my time sorting through bookshelves, trying to cull and sort and such. I found at least two of the tagged book, not together, so I rescued one copy.

Pickpick

The third volume of Piskor's simplified and consolidated retelling of the X-Men's convoluted and lengthy history presented in a decidedly "indie" style is, yet again, far more fresh and entertaining than it has any right to be.
