Home Fire: A Novel | Kamila Shamsie
Pickpick

Clever, moving story about UK boy being recruited to ISIS. Great characters, story starts with his sister in America. Interesting love story too. Big ending.

Bailedbailed

Enjoyable enough to read but I'm bored of the cult story and of reading about a male cult leader who controls and exploits. Would have continued reading it if it felt less familiar.

Barracuda: A Novel | Christos Tsiolkas
Bailedbailed

Stopped reading half way. He's an excellent writer but reading it is not fun cos you know what's coming and it's unpleasant. Similar vibe to Loaded.

Mehso-so

I liked the setting as I haven't read many books at in Gaza and you really get inside the characters head. He uses the story and characters really well to convey the culture and political situation. But at times I lost interest in the story and some of the dialogue is unconvincing, possibly this is a translation choice.

The Dutch House | Ann Patchett

I love her. She also wrote commonwealth. She writes so well about relationships and families and makes you care so much about her characters. Brother and sister and their obsession with their childhood home and issues cos their mum left. Made me so angry at points. Read all her books!

The Songlines | Bruce Chatwin

Describes his time in Alice and in aboriginal communities learning about songlines and aboriginal culture, explores migration and nomadism. Some sections are all quotes and notes from his journals over the years. Idea that people developed tools to fight off predators. Sedentary life in towns made these into weapons used against other people because of scarcity of resources.
