The Last One: A Novel | Alexandra Oliva
Pickpick

I loved this book. If you liked Station Eleven you'll probably like this, similar dystopian future style, different plot. I also liked how they referred to the reality show contestant by things like "waitress" and "tracker" and "engineer" because that is exactly how I refer to reality show people, I can never keep their names straight. ANYWAY, a good book.

This was a fun read if you are a foodie type and/or you've spent significant time in the Midwest. It is one of the most Minnesota books I've ever read.

It is one of those each chapter/section from a different character books, which is fine, but I do wish they had tied up some of the stories more. I felt like I didn't get to see the endings. But I guess it was like life - you just get snippets as other people's lives intersect yours for a while.

Animal Farm and 1984 | George Orwell, A.M. Heath
Pickpick

I had read Animal Farm before, but this was my first time for 1984. I loved 80% of 1984, only so-so on the last 20%. But over-all I'm glad I read them. Now I need something cheerier for sure though.

This series is good for what it is - an attractive vampire, a half-human lady, a lot of attraction, and enough plot to keep me into the books for at least a few more. Quick reads, good palate cleansers between more challenging books, or for times life is too challenging for me to have much leftover effort for books. This is the Cheetos of books, but man I love Cheetos sometimes. Three stars.

aprilbapryll Is this the one with the British vampire that says Mate a lot? I tried listening to the audio and it was so poorly done I abandoned it. 7y
AnnabelleSpeaks @aprilbapryll Yep. I read this on my kindle (most of my listening is podcasts, not audiobooks), so I have no opinion on the audio. I'd bet most of these book-a-year series books have poor audio versions. Not likely to spring for much vocal talent for churn-through-it series books. 7y

Louise Penny's writing is my happy place. This is the second book in the series.
