Wonder is about a boy named August (Auggie) who has a face distortedly. Throughout the book we learn about the challenges he faces at school and out in public, because of it. We learn about his side of the story as well as others who are close to him. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://thediscoveryapple.com/2017/10/16/10-activities-and-resources-to-go-with-... An ESOL strategy to go with this lesson is to “encourage self-talk (positive thinking) since they would be writing nice things about their classmates on their backs. 5y
DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with this is to “minimize threats and distractions” by explaining that we are only writing nice things about our classmates and we will be reading them out loud so make sure everyone writes on each other‘s backs. The teacher can also walk around and wring on the classmates to model expected behavior. 5y
DrSpalding What a precious picture. Did you mean universal design principle? Your English learner strategy and universal design principle work well with this title. The publisher has created an amazing resource to go along with this. Make sure you consult the publisher and author websites first before venturing out to others. 5y

365 Days of Wonder: Mr.Browne‘s Book of Precepts written by R.J. Palacio is a fiction book that has inspiring quotes for every day of the year. The quotes range from history, love, friendship, courage, and kindness. This would be a fun thing to do with the class as a bell ringer. We could start the morning by reading a quote and then writing about it or the teacher can simply ask comprehension questions about it. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comprehension-Questions-for-365-Days... An ESOL strategy to go with the lesson is to “continually monitor students comprehension” the teacher can do that by having the students write the quote and what they think it means in a journal. 5y
DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with it is to “highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships” since they would be finding the main idea of the quote and comparing it to their background knowledge. 5y

The Magic Tree House: Dingoes at Dinnertime is written by Mary Pope Osborne illustrated by Salvatore Murdocca is a fantasy fiction book. Jack and Annie go to Australia and discover that a wildfire has occurred in the forest. While there they discover that there is a baby kangaroo and koala are trapped in the forest. Jack and Annie try to help these animals escape and along the way face many challenges. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://images.randomhouse.com/promo_image/9780679890669_3213.pdf An ESOL strategy to go with the lesson is to “link lesson topic to student‘s prior knowledge” by matching different animals to where they think they live. An E.D strategy to go with it is to “offer ways of customizing the display of information”. Instead of giving the list to the students the teacher can print out the animals and have different backdrops with the different habitats 5y
DrSpalding Make sure you are using the appropriate abbreviations. This is considered modern fantasy rather than fantasy fiction and universal design principle is UDL. 5y

This is a silver Caldecott honor book about a boy named David who does things that he is not supposed to do. https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/no-david-exten... An E.D strategy that would go with this book would be to “optimize choice and autonomy”. This strategy would apply because students would choose what thing someone in their life has told them not to do.#ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An ESOL strategy to go with this book would be to “integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities” since we would read the book as a class then write about a personal experience we have had with someone telling us no and making a book about it. 5y
Macker11 I think these books would be cute to incorporate into maybe the beginning of the year when the class is discussing the rules and what is right and wrong. 5y
DeannaP I think so as well! I also think it would be a helpful resource to use when a child is misbehaving. You can re direct their attention to these books. 5y
Kendylleonard I love this book! It‘s a great story to read to students at the beginning of the school year to encompass classroom rules. I know plenty of students that love reading this series! Also, I love your idea of having students write about their own personal experience. It allows them to relate it to their own lives, which is very beneficial! 5y
DrSpalding You could also include the author study shared in class! This is an excellent resource. These books are so appropriate for our kindergarten and first grade population. 5y

Song and Dance Man written by Karen Ackerman illustrated by Stephen Gammell is a fiction picture book that won a gold Caldecott honor. It is about a grandpa who tells stories of the time he danced on stage then goes up into the attic with his grandchildren and pulls out his old dancing shoes and starts to dance, sing, make jokes, and do tricks. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/song-and-dance... An ESOL strategy to go with this activity would be to “promote cooperation” since they will be putting on a performance together. An E.D strategy to go with this lesson would be to “optimize individual choice and autonomy” by allowing them to pick their groups and pick which sound they would like to present. 5y
DawnS This sounds like such a fun book and the resource would really get our students excited. I like the social study cross curriculum options on the website you included too! What an awesome idea to have this lead into interviewing an older family member about past memories. 5y

He is very persistent in wanting to be a hawk even though family reminds him of all the amazing things he can do. He describes what he wants to do and why he wants to be a hawk and eventually adopts one and teaches it how to fly. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Hawk-Im-Your-Brother-for-Literature-... An ESOL strategy to go with this book would be to “teach technical vocabulary supporting key concepts” since the book has a lot of large words for young readers. An E.D strategy to go along with the book would be to “optimize access to tools and assistive technologies”. I would do this and the ESOL strategies by allowing the students to look up words th 5y

Miss Hickory is a fantasy fiction chapter book that won the gold John Newberry Medal. This book is about a doll named Miss Hickory who has an owner named Ann who left New Hampshire to go to school in Boston. Miss Hickory doesn‘t believe that Ann has really left her behind so Miss Hickory continues with her daily life cleaning house, until she becomes homeless and talking to and about the animals. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP For the activity the students would practice giving human qualities to things found in nature by doing this we are doing the ESOL strategy “integrating speaking, listening, reading and writing activities”. We would also “support planning and strategy development” (E.D strategy) by talking and planning what object in nature we would describe and what human qualities it may have. http://nancypolette.com/LitGuidesText/misshickory.htm 5y
DrSpalding Do you mean modern fantasy? Remember that you were to use the genres from the guide in class. These are important. They are universal genres that educators need to know. 5y
DrSpalding UDL Again stands for universal design for learning. These are principles that we must know in order to meet the needs of all students. 5y

Don‘t let the Pigeon Drive the Bus words and pictures by Mo Willems has won a Caldecott Medal. This book is about a bus driver that must leave, and he warns the reader not to let the pigeon drive the bus. The pigeon tries different techniques to persuade you to let him drive until the bus driver comes back. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with this book would be to “offer alternatives for auditory information” this book comes in multiple languages, so the teacher could read it in English and the student‘s other language which also goes with the ESOL strategy “provide contextual support through audio visuals, models, demonstrations, realia, body language and facial expressions”. https://www.teachingideas.co.uk/library/books/dont-let-the-pigeon-drive-the-bus 5y
DMoux Super interesting how the link incorporates different teaching ideas for English, Math, Science and other subjects! Love Mo Willems and his style of writing, it really makes the reader feel involved. :) 5y

This fiction picture book worn a silver Caldecott Honor. It is about a man named Issac who had a dream that he would find trustee near a castle. The book talks about his journey there and his encounter with a guard that said following your dreams is crazy and if he were to follow his dream he would find treasure at Issacs house under the microwave. Issac went home and did find the treasure right where the guard said it was. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An ESOL strategy I would use for this book would be to “teach questioning for classification” that would go along with the lesson where students are making inferences about the book. An E.D strategy that would go with this would be to “guide appropriate goal setting”. 5y

The Paperboy | Dav Pilkey, Pilkey
post image
Pickpick

The Paperboy written and illustrated by Dav Pilkey is a fiction picture book that won the silver Caldecott Honor. This book talks about a paper boy and his dogs morning routine from not wanting to wake up, to delivering the papers before the sun comes up, to coming home and going back to bed. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP After reading the book I would have the students get into small groups and have them write about a scene in the book and question what the paper boy might be doing, thinking, and feeling. After they finish writing I would have them as a group write and act out the scene. An E.D strategy to go with this lesson would be to “offer ways of customizing the display of information” for example while acting out I may suggest one student being a narrator. 5y
DeannaP An ESOL strategy to go with this would be to “use student pairs for team learning”. Lesson: http://teacher.scholastic.com/products/face/pdf/literacy-events/LiteracyEvent_Sa... 5y
Macker11 I love the activity that you have the students doing after they read this book! They get to be creative and write about the scene in the book, then act it out! Acting it out, is definitely a good strategy for the ESOL learners! 5y
Dylanburgett I‘ve never heard of this book before but since it‘s a Caldecott award winner I‘ll definitely have to check it out! 5y

The Day the Crayons Quit written by Drew Daywalt illustrated by Oliver Jeffers is a fiction picture book that won the Goodreads Choice Awards Best Picture Book. This is a hilarious book is about a boy named Duncan that went to color but when he opened his box of crayons there was letter from each color crayon saying they quit! Some crayons say they are over worked, some say they are never used, and two are at war. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP A lesson I would do for this book to improve comprehension would be to play a memory matching game. The students would match the color crayon as to why they quit. I would create my own matching game not use the one that‘s in the link, but I got the idea from the link. An ESOL strategy to go with this would be to “focus on thinking skills; predict, categorize, classify, observe, and report”. 5y
DeannaP An E.D strategy would be to “minimize threats and distractions” I would do this by making sure each student has their own set of cards to match. Activity: https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/word-match/day-crayons-quit-memory-match 5y

Snowmen All Year Written by Caralyn Buehner illustrated by Mark Buehner is a fiction picture book. This is about a little boy who built a snowman one winter and hopes that it is a magic snowman that will not melt. He talks about all the fun things he would do with him year-round from playing games, camping, to going trick or treating.#ucflae3414su19

DeannaP A lesson that I would use to go with this book gives students the opportunity to learn their seasons and practice writing. The students would list all the seasons and write about an activity that they would do with their snowman for that season. 5y
DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with this activity would be to “activate or supply background knowledge” by going season by season and what the weather is like that season and what they may do or have done that season. An ESOL strategy that is similar to the E.D strategy is to “link lesson to students‘ prior knowledge”. This lesson was found on: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Snowmen-All-Year-Activity-3559811 5y
DrSpalding I think you won this book! Good for you! Yes this would accompany a science or social studies unit quite well. Always think of how you can use great books and other content areas. Minor errors. 5y

This is a fiction book that was nominated for Goodreads choice awards Best middle grade & children. It is about an 11-year-old girl named Melody who has cerebral palsy, due to it she is unable to speak but has so much to say. We learn about he life experiences and the difficulties she faces such that go along with her disability. People assume she is not smart when really, she is extremely clever.#ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An activity that I would do with the class would put the students in Melody‘s shoes, the students would not talk use a communication board for 2 hours. An E.D strategy to go with this would be to offer ways for visual information” each student would create their own board with their own words and display the board however they would like. 5y
DeannaP An ESOL strategy would be to “promote cooperation” the student would have to interact with each other using the boards, they could not just sit there and be quiet. This lesson was found on: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Out-of-My-Mind-Novel-Activities-Comm... 5y

Pickpick

This is a fiction picture book about the students and teachers last day of school. Since it is the last week of school they do things together as a class for “the last time” the teacher Mrs.Hartwell keeps saying how she will miss them. The students are worried that she will spend the entire summer missing them, so they try to find her a perfect present, so she won‘t sit around doing nothing missing them. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An activity that would go with this book is that the students will write down what they will miss from their current grade and what they look forward to in their next grade. An ESOL strategy to go with this would be to “encourage positive thinking (self-talk)” since they will be thinking about what they are looking forward to and the things they enjoyed that current year. 5y
DeannaP An E.D strategy to go with it would be to “offer ways of customizing the display of information” the students can write it at as a letter for themselves and make a time capsule, or make it into a poster board.  Activity found on: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Last-Day-Blues-activity-784324 5y

This book is a fiction Caldecott honor book. It is about a family that lost everything in a fire and had to move to start all over again. The mother brought home the biggest jar she could find and they all saved and put coins until the jar until it was full, once it was they went and bought the chair. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An E.D strategy I would use with this book would be to “optimize relevance, value, and authenticity‘” since some students may have gone through a similar circumstance like this before. An ESOL strategy I would use would be to “integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities” since they would be building and writing about their dream chair after reading the book. 5y

Tippy-Toe Chick, Go! Written by George Shannon and illustrated by Laura Dronzek is a picture book won the silver Charlotte Zolotow Award.  This book is about a family of chicks that wanted to eat but to do it they had to pass a big scary dog. The Momma hen, big chick, and medium chick all tried but were to scared. Little chick was so hungry that it tried and tricked the dog, so they were all able to pass it to eat. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP A perfect ESOL strategy I would use to go with this book would be to “encourage self-talk (positive thinking” and say that they can do anything they set their mind to, just like baby chick did. An E.D strategy I would use to go with this book would be to “foster collaboration and community” by talking about the book and how we can be like baby chick. We would also foster collaboration by doing a graphic organizer about drawing conclusions. 5y

Hush!: A Thai Lullaby was written by Mingfong Ho and illustrated by Holly Meade is a children‘s poetry picture book that won the silver Caldecott Honor. Is a rhyming book about a mother who goes around telling animals near the house to hush because her baby is sleeping nearby. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP An E.D strategy I would use with this book would be to “foster collaboration and community”. I would do this by having student engage in the book and say what the Mom says next because it is repetitive. An ESOL strategy I would use would be to “incorporate the culture and language of second language learners in the curriculum” by translating some or all of the words of the book into their language then work on English by doing a word search. 5y

Tonight, we read “There was an old lady who swallowed a fly” by Simms Taback. This is a fiction picture book that won the silver Caldecott award. It‘s about a Lady who started off swallowing a fly, and no one knows why. She then continues to swallow a bunch of animals. She starts off eating small animals that catch one another and gradually increases to eating big ones until she dies. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP This would be a good book for students who are still learning their animals, learning sizes, sequences or are learning how to rhyme. An ESOL strategy that could go along with this book would be to “continually monitor students‘ comprehension” I could do this by asking which animals she ate before reading the new one she eats.  A lesson that could go with this book is where the students change the ending of the book. 5y
DeannaP https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/there-was-old-... An ED strategy to go with this would be to clarify syntax and structure. We can discuss as a class the word choice the author used and how it was set up. 5y
Macker11 Scholastic really has some great resources! I like the idea of rewriting the ending! 5y
DrSpalding I love that you read these books to your son! He will be a wonderful little person to test out great books on! Traditional literature is wonderful for storytelling. 5y

This biography was nominated for Jane Addams Children‘s book award as a book for younger children. It‘s about a woman named Belle who was born into slavery. The book talks about her as an individual and the journeys she made spreading her messages. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP The ESOL strategy that I would use to go with this lesson would be to encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships. With this book they would be not just reading the book but also looking at the pictures to identify her traits. They would then make a diagram listing these traits. The U.D strategy I would use would be to highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. (3.2) 5y

Henry‘s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad is written by Ellen Levine and illustrated by Kadir Nelson. This historical fiction picture book won the silver Caldecott honor.  It‘s an emotional story about a boy named Henry that was separated from his family and sold into the slave market. He escapes by mailing himself North. We learn about his journey in the box and what his first taste of freedom was like. #ucflae3414su19

DeannaP This book can be used when discussing the Abolitionist Movement. ESOL strategy: the teacher can integrate speaking, listening, reading and writing activities. An activity can include watching https://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/ushistory/undergroundrailroad/ then writing a journal article as if they were a slave traveling it. The U.D strategy is that students activate or supply background knowledge on what they already know about slavery. 5y
