A wonderfully told Boston crime novel about an ex con and his foster care granddaughter. If you haven‘t heard of Len Rosen, he‘s a talented and clear writer who will take you through a compelling tale with smart compassion!

I am working on a novel about a young man in 1969 so I was curious about this coming of age story about a boy in the 1970s Brooklyn. I really liked the point of view and the writing—some wonderful passages about living on the block as a shy white nerdy kid. But the plot just never took off into any conflict or story that grabbed me. So regret this one was a DNF for me.

Enjoying my new Christmas book world of revenge and literary intrigue in civil war Spain by Carlos Ruiz Zafon! If you don‘t know the Shadow of the Wind series, get yourself to a Barcelona bookshop and rectify that!

This book grows into a psychological crime story like a tree in your back yard sinks roots into your mind and casts ghostly shadows over your memory. Brilliant first person tale that follows a lucky bloke into some troubles he can't shake.

Mrs. Fletcher: A Novel | Tom Perrotta

It's college drop off season. For a completely spot on contemporary domestic tale of divorcee Eve and her freshman son's drama, check out Mrs. Fletcher. The near misses and courageous moments are like living inside the lives of your "normal hometown neighbors" in suburban America in the social media era.

If you can imagine Swedish centenarian caper version of Forrest Gump, and don‘t mind absurdist tale-telling, you can find some real laughs and a deadpan take on the crazed 20th century following the antics of Allan Karlsson. Then again my mother-in-law said, "Did you finish that? I thought it was silly." So take your pick.

If you can pick up the underlying story from the gabbing ghosts, you‘ll pick your way through the graveyard and some wonderful passages and characters that feels a bit like Shakespeare combined with Beckett. (I also learned the meaning of Bardo to boot.)

I'm slogging may way through to find out if this awful father will ever except the golden-hearted daughter. I still love dank, dark Dickens the night time observer but lordy be he takes his time serializing in a slower age.

Looking for an antidote to saachrine during the Holidays? Give the residents of Pine Cove a try and you can get some laughs while a few amateur dectectives get drunk, coral a fruit bat as a pet, and battle some talking dead folk out at the old chapel graveyard.

This dark comic tale covers the generational craziness and quirks of a father, son, and an uncle as they attempt the criminal and familial fates. Their histories, tellings, journals, and voices are funny, tragic, and layered--and the 500 pages will take you somewhere well worth the long trip to Australia and a fresh inside out view of our bizarre modern society.

The Fact of a Body: A Murder and a Memoir | Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich

This a dark and disturbing memoir that delves into the the entwined stories of a Louisiana murder and the writer's own past family secrets. She uses structure to explore truth and memory--what she is trying to wrestle could never be linear. Expect to be discomforted but enlightened by unspoken crimes.

Since my day job is in rare disease research, I was curious whether this book (which everyone tells me is now a movie) was going to sap up the Cancer Experience. But it's a smart, wise ass, and thoughtful story on illness, novels, and our relationship with the short time we have.

Time to start this memoir! Heard her speak in Boston and was great intertwining of her past and a death penalty case she takes as a new green lawyer.

"Stately, plump Buck Mulligan came from the stair head, bearing a bowl of lather on which a mirror and a razor lay crossed." Happy Bloomsday, Dubliners!!
