Labyrinth of the Spirits | Carlos Ruiz Zafon
110 posts | 68 read | 8 reading | 89 to read
The internationally acclaimed, New York Times bestselling author returns to the magnificent universe he constructed in his bestselling novels The Shadow of the Wind, The Angel's Game, and The Prisoner of Heaven in this riveting series finale--a heart-pounding thriller and nail-biting work of suspense which introduces a sexy, seductive new heroine whose investigation shines a light on the dark history of Franco's Spain. In this unforgettable final volume of Ruiz Zafn's cycle of novels set in the universe of the Cemetery of Forgotten Books, beautiful and enigmatic Alicia Gris, with the help of the Sempere family, uncovers one of the most shocking conspiracies in all Spanish history.Nine-year-old Alicia lost her parents during the Spanish Civil War when the Nacionales (the fascists) savagely bombed Barcelona in 1938. Twenty years later, she still carries the emotional and physical scars of that violent and terrifying time. Weary of her work as an investigator for Spain's secret police in Madrid, a job she has held for more than a decade, the twenty-nine-year old plans to move on. At the insistence of her boss, Leandro Montalvo, she remains to solve one last case: the mysterious disappearance of Spain's Minister of Culture, Mauricio Valls. With her partner, the intimidating policeman Juan Manuel Vargas, Alicia discovers a possible clue--a rare book by the author Victor Mataix hidden in Valls' office in his Madrid mansion. Valls was the director of the notorious Montjuic Prison in Barcelona during World War II where several writers were imprisoned, including David Martn and Victor Mataix. Traveling to Barcelona on the trail of these writers, Alicia and Vargas meet with several booksellers, including Juan Sempere, who knew her parents. As Alicia and Vargas come closer to finding Valls, they uncover a tangled web of kidnappings and murders tied to the Franco regime, whose corruption is more widespread and horrifying than anyone imagined. Alicia's courageous and uncompromising search for the truth puts her life in peril. Only with the help of a circle of devoted friends will she emerge from the dark labyrinths of Barcelona and its history into the light of the future. In this haunting new novel, Carlos Ruiz Zafn proves yet again that he is a masterful storyteller and pays homage to the world of books, to his ingenious creation of the Cemetery of Forgotten, and to that magical bridge between literature and our lives.

All I can say is, WOW Zafón did it again! That guy is a literary master, in my mind. It was well worth the late hours and headache/eye strain I'll have from devouring the last 300 pages in a matter of hours, tomorrow. I already can't wait to re-read this entire series 💞

Yesterday I culled my book collection. 11 boxes of books later!

I am donating them and I feel good that someone else will get to enjoy them.

I still probably have a a couple hundred books, that's the next project ÷ logging what's left.

Has anyone else done a massive cull? We're you relieved? Did you have regrets?

Happy Sunday!

Tamra Yes & yes!! 4mo
Coleen_Nieto @Tamra Did you find that you were more selective in buying books after? I am so sore! 4mo

This 805–page tome is a labyrinth of interwoven plot lines. The writing is excellent. Sometimes I would look up after reading a scene and wonder, “How did the author do it? How did he evoke such an atmosphere, such a convergence of personalities, in such a seemingly effortless manner?” It is a long trek through this book, and I dabbled in other literature now and then along the way, but it is well worth reading. Hats off to Carlos Ruiz Zafón! ?

Lidia The perfect conclusion to a wonderful seriesI. I love his writing 5mo
BookwormM Amazing series 5mo
Louise @Lidia I love his writing, too, though I sometimes wished this volume had been divided into 2 or 3 books to help the reader to follow the various plot threads. Of course, that might have taken away from the labyrinthine quality he was going for in this one. Thankfully, he offered some insight into his literary theory through Carax‘s advice to the young writer. Great series! (edited) 5mo
Louise @BookwormM Yes! And don‘t you just love Fermín? He gets some of the best lines! 5mo

I‘m not sure how to put into words all of the feelings that this book, and this series, evokes in me. This fourth (and last) tome is a monster in length and took me nearly a full two months to get through, but was so worth it. If, like me, you were unsure or unsettled about books 2 and 3 in the series, you need to persevere through to the end of this one. It pulls them all together beautifully. Ending this series is so bittersweet for me.

Coleen_Nieto @Coleen it's been on my tbr pile since it came out. I'll have to start it. I love this series. 5mo
Coleen @Coleen_Nieto Definitely do it! I‘d recommend taking notes (lots of characters to keep track of) and maybe re-reading the previous books prior to starting. That helped me a lot with remembering a lot of things I‘d forgotten. 5mo
Coleen_Nieto @Coleen I started it and then went back to Prisoner of Heaven to reacquaint myself. I love this series! Have a great weekend! 5mo

I love Zafon‘s writing so much and the ending did not disappoint. There were so many characters I had to take notes to keep them all straight. I realize I skipped The Prisoner of Heaven which precedes this story and I need to remedy that. I crave rereading Shadow now that the Cemetery has been revisited. I was not 100% thrilled with the dissolution of a main character but over all this was really good. #litsyAtoZ challenge @BookishMarginalia

New book haul. ?? A perfect mix of new and old. ? Though, naturally, what I'm currently reading is most definitely not in this wonderful stack of books. I really need to catch up on my TBR list. It's getting ridiculously long, especially when I keep on adding to it. Nonetheless, I'm curious and excited about "The Labyrinth of the Spirits" as it brings Zafon's series to an end. Definitely the next choice!?

Bailedbailed

I‘m astonished. The Shadow of the Wind is one of my favorite books. I‘ll admit that Angels Game and Prisoner of Heaven were only so-so for me, but I did mostly enjoy them. I was so excited for this book, and I‘m in the WAY minority here, but it just dragged for me. I read a lot; two weeks into this book and I barely got 100 pages in. It is very rare that I bail on a book, but I did this one. I will give it another go in the future though.

SailorMoon I'm so sorry you didn't like it... it's true that it is different from the rest of the other books from the "Barcelona saga", it has more surreal things going on... but I just couldn't put it down. It's the one I liked the least among the others, but I thought it still was a good story. Give it another shot maybe some other time? ? 9mo
TheBogwitch @SailorMoon I‘m definitely going to give it another go over the summer, when reading time is more abundant. Being a writer, I spend most of my day with words! I mostly read in the morning over coffee. This book requires more attention. 9mo
SailorMoon Glad to hear you haven'y given up completely on it! You are a writer? Sounds amazing! I actually studied to become a journalist in my own Country and even though I changed my mind midway through university, I still spent all my free time writing. Have you had anything published I can look up? 9mo

SailorMoon Of course, I wasn't comparing the work of an author to my attempts of writing fan fictions or pieces for online publications, I hope it didn't come out wrong! Anyways, I'm from Italia. Wow, seven novels... a great accomplishment!!! I will look up the one you just said! 9mo
TheBogwitch @SailorMoon of course not! I didn‘t take it that way at all. Italia! The land of my people! Do you live there still? 9mo

The author has managed (once more) to successfully linked all the strings of the incountless substories, events, secrets, characters ... into comprehensive story with solid historical framework. Sometimes tense, sometimes sad sometimes even comical, but throughout - heartwarming story which is spiced up with Fermin‘s wittiness. Nice conclusion to this series. And this book have my new favorite female protagonist - Alicia.
