I'm reading this because my little sister said she loved it
This book, of how trauma and suffering happens and is passed on, broke my heart and made me weep in its last pages. Difficult and beautiful. I'm so glad this book exists in the world.
Just started this but it is very very good. (Sorry for the jpg but ebooks do not make compelling pictures)
Gorgeous. Heartbreaking. On language and race and loneliness and who we are and how we are or are not seen. With a chimp thrown in. Must read.
What I envy is not their skin but their insouciance. I envy the freedom to sin with only a little bit of consequence, to commit on selfish act and not have it mean the downfall of my entire people.
This little known book was my favorite book of 2014. It's beautifully wrought, complete with made up ape language that is the real gem. The main character, an ape, becomes devastatingly human. it deserves more attention than its gotten.
This was the best and worst book I've ever read. I read 700 pages in three sleepless nights and I was broken afterwards. It made me want to love myself more. It made me want to love others more. It was triggering and awful and absolutely necessary.
My favorite book of 2014. Broke my heart. Moved me. Told a story that felt like mine, in the way I live my life.
