I actually had the opportunity to finish this book in Edinburgh, which tickled me to pieces. Love this series. I hope there are books until Bertie turns 18!

This wasn't a rollicking tale by any measure. It's a rather simple tale. But it's rich with an almost postcard view of the living conditions at the time and the politics within a very small Scottish community. Yet, I did get caught up in it and enjoyed the read very much. I'm left mystified by one thing: why didn't any of the characters say 'Aye' for yes? I was expecting to hear more of the Scottish dialect and didn't feel the book hit that mark.

This one really grabbed me, but then the numerous changes in direction, while surprising and unexpected, kind of left me more disappointed than more intrigued. I have to say that I did enjoy the ending. It was a good chuckle after making it that far. And then I thought maybe chuckling wasn't exactly what the author had intended. :-O

This one just sucked me in and what a great ride it was! I almost stopped reading - didn't know if I had the stomach for it, to be honest - but kept telling myself that it was just a book. That will tell you tonnes about the experience right there. Characters were excellent, plot was so well paced and the story was captivating. First pick of 2017.

I was kind of disappointed with this one, especially in the last half. The concepts were great, the main character was well developed, but the rest of the cast were very poorly done and it was a bit anticlimactic by the time I got to the end. Just so-so for me.

I can't believe it took me so long to read this one. Good action, interesting premise and great characters. What more could you want. Looking forward to the next book in the series!

It took me some time, but I finally cracked this one open beyond page 20 and discovered a very interesting read about a time I didn't know anything about. This is a depiction of Westinghouse vs Edison that I'm pretty sure isn't completely historically accurate. But who the heck cares when the story is so interesting? Good read.

Suetara I need to pick this one up-really liked The Sherlockian. 7y
Lindisfarne @Suetara I'll need to pick up The Sherlockian, then, for sure. Cheers. 7y

Bailedbailed

Well... I really tried to get into this book and I bought in to the whole premise, but I couldn't finish it and had to bail. I did get to a point where I thought it had grabbed me and I earnestly gave into the feeling, but it was fleeting and I've finally admitted to myself that I need to break up with this one.

I can't express adequately how much I enjoyed this book. Or the characters in it. Each and every element of the book contributed to the overall plot and it's movement forward. And the ending! It was perfect for what I had come to expect of the story. Big recommend!

Started my 2nd read through in preparation of seeing the movie. I usually think the book is better than the movie, but in this case I may be pleasantly surprised? Probably not, so just as well I'm reading the book again.

I read this book so quickly that I almost forgot that I did read it! It was a great romp of a book, though. It continues the story of the Kopp sisters, though this one was a little light on the sisters. Which just meant that there was more adventure and crime fighting! Constance Kopp continues to impress! Already impatient for the next one now.

Just couldn't get in to it. Love of dogs was a prerequisite, but had absolutely no impact on love of this book.

When I read a recent review of Ms Holt's latest book I looked her up on my TBR list and I had added this, her first book, in 2013. High time I gave her a go, then. Prime Scandinavia-Crime fiction! I'll be reading the 2nd book very soon!

I wish I hadn't read this book now and waited until next March because the next book in the series is supposed to be out in April. So good, tho. I could not stop once I started reading.

Just finished this one. And I'm ambivalent about it, to be honest. I found it a bit precocious at the beginning, but Evie kept me hanging on to the end. It was so full of its own insightful sayings that they began to sound like pathetic wimperings from a spoilt and rejected child after a while. Just so-so for me.

Wonderful read. The book is peppered with so many real artifacts that I had to constantly remind myself it is fiction. An adventure book in so many ways: externally and internally to the characters. Such individual voices in one book is a magnificent treat. Ms Ivey continues to impress and is on my list of must read authors now.

Barkskins: A Novel | Annie Proulx
Pickpick

It took a little while, but I eventually got really into this book. It was like a 'Chesapeake' for trees or forests. The family histories provided continuity for the development of Ms Proulx's story of man's drive to deforest the entire earth. At times harrowing, in the context of the amount of destruction humans are capable of, a glimmer of hope was offered to the reader as conservation efforts gained more of the story line.

CynCruz23 Love your description! I'm about halfway through but I agree with everything you wrote. I've been reading it a little sporadically lately but I'm still not lost thanks to Proulx's ability to keep driving the narrative forward and maintain the themes so well despite if I remembered which character is which (thank goodness for the family trees in the back) 🌲🌲🌲 8y

Really disappointed in this one after the first two were more than decent. Everyone just needs love to solve all their cruel personality disorders... Come on! What I thought was a good tear into one percenter types morphed into a Star Wars movie. Finished it, but just.

MrBook Lol, thank you for the insight. 8y

A very thought provoking read. One woman's decent into psychosis from 3 different vantage points. Except you start to wonder who is really suffering from psychosis. Lots of punch in a short read.

Added to the pile and up next. I know I'm setting myself up for heartbreak, but I can't resist. I see a good cry in my future.
