Currently re-reading (or technically listening to the audiobook version for the 1st time) and it's just as awesome if not more so the 2nd time around. In an effort to reread more, it's a lot easier for me to do if I consume the book In an alternate format. Basically if I've listened to it on audiobook, I'll read the physical copy/ebook and vice versa. It's really helped me gain new perspectives on the story and usually has deepen my appreciation.

The Parasol Protectorate series is a welcome escape for pretty much anyone; it definitely leans more towards the more feminine and Victorian sensibilities. However can enjoy the quick-witted dialogue and fast paced plot and the hilarious chapter titles. Just great - my favorite find of the year so far 😎

Riveted_Reader_Melissa These are great on audiobook too. Enjoy!! 7y

What a great book! Simply perfect in giving me exactly what I want even if it is terribly predictable and just a touch clichè. There are so many different descriptives you could use for this series but if I had to boil it down, it's a quick read that gives you some innocent wish fulfillment in a fun setting with sassy characters and petticoats. Not something I would normally go for but so glad I gave it a chance ?

Rating: ?8/10

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Yep, I completely understand that. We all need a good, just for fun, page-turner read sometimes. 7y

Watched a ton of Netflix on the lowest brightness setting on my tablet but now I'm FINALLY feeling better so I decided to pick something light and easy and it's not a disappointment. Wow, what a simple but poignant group of sentences ? I always struggle with showing others the different parts of my personality especially when they've only known me in a specific way. It feels like I've got secret identities and I get all kinds of unnecessary self-conscious-y about it and it feels like I have "reintroduce myself" How Becky Albertalli has managed to convey this complicated concept in a few simple sentences is just wonderful ?

About to try out the #BookOut app! Has anyone used it? Is it useful?

Lola I started playing with it yesterday. If I keep it (in hoping to decide at the end of my current read when I see what they do with stats) I'm going to have to pay up for the pro version. The ads are driving me batty. 7y
Ais I got it, but I deleted it. It started to stress me out, and when you log some books it doesn't seem to open up automatically to the book you're currently reading so you have to flick through the thumbnails to get to where you're currently at! I can see why people would like it though when it does show your interesting stats! 7y
CynCruz23 Thanks for the heads up @Lola & @Ais! I wasn't sure if I should even give it a try. I did see that many reviews match your sentiments so maybe I might drop it for now and come back in a couple of months to see if they've updated it with the changes people want to see. The infographics are pretty awesome so definitely worth a second look 7y
Ais @CynCruz23 I think you also need to buy the pro version in order to set some of the bigger goals and the like. I'm not sure how the infographics work! It's not really an interactive site and there doesn't seem to be much too it beyond tracking your reading patterns. You'd also wonder how your information is going to be used to be honest! But if I was someone who loved graphs etc., I think I could see the benefits then, it just wasn't for me! 7y
CynCruz23 @Ais good to know. All really good points 🤔🤔🤔 damn just love the idea but the execution is definitely lackluster for the moment. Guess I'll stick to my spreadsheet and maybe I'll use Canva to make my own cool infographics 📶 7y

This series is just incredible. Osamu Tezuka is considered the "godfather" of manga but really should be essential to all literary circles as a master of pacing, restraint and poise. Buddha's journey is packed full of significant moments but the playfulness and humor expertly woven in elevates it to be memorable, impactful. Tezuka knows when to let moments breathe and when to inject life. Dedicate a weekend to this series, its worth it ?10/10

I read this on a whirlwind of a trip and It was paced perfectly to keep me unfocused on the annoyances of flying. I enjoyed the format a lot - the unreliable narrator/interviewer helped keep me engaged and really made me question what was what. Some of the characters come off a little flat but I think it logically makes sense considering the "narrator". It was unpredictable to me which was fun. Bailedbailed

Hey Litsy pals, ever experienced a book that seems perfect for you but when you actually read it, you just don't get it? I've been excited to read this series since it's adored but perhaps it's been too overhyped for me, or perhaps it's not the right time for me, or I simply don't like it. I really hate this specific frustration, it makes me feel guilty, uncool, & sad. Had to force myself to DNF so I don't hate read it & rage about it later 😞

BookishFeminist Yes! I've disliked or bailed on everything by Gillian Flynn. I see the appeal but it has major problems I couldn't get past despite her writing the dark types of books I typically like. It's such a disappointing feeling! 8y
CynCruz23 @BookishFeminist yep! I feel the same way about Flynn. I tried to read Gone Girl 3 times to no avail. I also wonder how hard it is to shake your initial negative or apathetic feeling for a book/series when you attempt to give it another shot. Probably lots of time apart in between attempts might be key but I'm not sure 8y
BookishFeminist @CynCruz23 Glad I'm not alone! I read Gone Girl all the way through. I found it rather misogynistic (though I'm assuming not intentionally so). I don't think I've ever successfully picked a book back up after bailing! I tend to stick with it or I don't, unless I set it down for reasons besides having a negative impression of it. I also read Dark Places and regret it LOL. I really wanted to get into the fuss & don't know why I did it to myself. 😭 8y
See All 10 Comments
Megabooks @bookishfeminist @CynCruz23 If I bail, I usually don't pick it up again either! Lately I've been bailing on books with whiny/troubled married couples - especially if they're unlikable. I think I read so many of that ilk, I got super tired of it! 8y
k_andrws @BookishFeminist I thought the whole misogyny in Gone Girl was on purpose, which is understood more later on in the book, but I found it hard to get into, too. The writing style really wasn't for me, although I found Flynn's other books (Sharp Objects especially!) such a better read. 8y
k_andrws And @CynCruz23 it's such a shame that you didn't enjoy Maggie's books! Personally I loved them, but there were definitely points where it took a lot of effort to pick them back up after I'd had a little break, so I totally see where you're coming from! 8y
BookishFeminist @k_andrws I think a lot of the misogyny in the book is intentional but that the overall plot structure, themes, and how she constructs her female characters is unintentionally misogynist. Her writing style is also not for me. She loves her some semicolons. I *hated* Dark Places and found it to be very predictable and not as developed as Gone Girl, so I don't think I'll give Sharp Objects a try. She's just not going to be for me, I think. 8y
BookishFeminist @k_andrws A few months ago I remember having a really good convo deconstructing the internalized misogyny in Gone Girl with @KVanRead & someone else I can't remember- it's a good book to deconstruct I think because it has a lot of problems in my opinion but also has a wide appeal base. 8y
KVanRead @BookishFeminist @k_andrws I remember that convo. It gave the chance to vent some of my Gone Girl rage😂 This blog post does a great job of deconstructing the misogyny https://interrogatingmedia.com/2012/08/20/gone-girl-and-the-specter-of-feminism/ 8y

Sometimes it's just f-in good for your soul to read something heartbreaking and then patch it back it together with "all-the-feels" glue. listening to kickass ladies while running make marathon training a snap ? just the right amount of action and fun. Not to mention really smart and funny writing. I'd recommend the audiobook over reading just for the narrator of "Desparado" alone - deliciously punchy especially when she curses ?

itsbrb I've never actually listened to a book while doing a half marathon but I've been giving it some thought. I only listen to book podcasts (I know, super specific) because they change topic often. Any other books you would recommend while running? 8y
CynCruz23 If you enjoy Haruki Murakami, listening to "What I talk about when I talk about running" is excellent. It helped me get into a zen state of mood. Other books that really help me when running are any comedic memoirs, they do an excellent job in distracting you. My favorites so far are Amy Poehler and Chris Rock. Short stories always work well for me because they're usually short and very focused and changes often (like podcasts) ??? 8y

CynCruz23 @itsbrb glad you liked the Murakami! I actually enjoyed it more than his fiction 🙊 we listen to all the same podcasts 👏😁 I miss BOTNS with @Annkingman and @mkindness so much! But in happy they ended their awesome run in their own terms 8y
CynCruz23 @mkindness thank you for countless hours of entertainment, laughs, and so many "I need to read that book!" moments while I'm running! Also you were definitely the best comic/graphic novel recommender out there #botnsforever 8y

My nomination for the @TheSpinecrackersBookClub #augustphotochallenge for #favbookishfriends are Joe & Sam. Their relationship might be one of the most complicated but their connection endures despite all of their conflicts. Is it cheating if they're technically cousins? 😁

TheSpinecrackersBookClub Hah! No cheating and great choice! 8y

Mehso-so

I really wanted to like this book since so many people have such great love for this series. But.... It's just not working for me. It was incredibly easy to read and I appreciated the writing style but everything kinda just came together which is one of the main flaws I see in a lot of YA. I did love the characters though so I'm really on the fence if I should continue? Does the rest of the series make up for some of these quibbles?

coffeenebula Continue. I think it got better with time. 😎 8y
CynCruz23 @tanya42 ok! 50% of me wanted to continue. They're easy and fast to read so I'm gonna pick up the 2nd book from the library and give it a try. If it still doesn't stick, I'll drop it. Thanks! 👍👍 8y
coffeenebula 👍 curious to hear what you think! 8y
CynCruz23 @tanya42 finally started The Dream Thieves and I'm already like it a lot better than the first book 8y
coffeenebula @CynCruz23 👍👍👍 8y

East of Eden | John Steinbeck

My vote for a great minimalistic cover. Simple yet poignant - conveys instantly one of the most important themes of this book, the brutality of familial relationships. Conflict all over Salinas Valley biblical style. Conclusion: it's freakin tough being a Steinbeck character.
