The Wonder
The Wonder | Emma Donoghue
A small Irish village is mystified by what appears to be a miracle but may actually be murder in the next masterpiece from New York Timesbestselling author Emma Donoghue. A small village in 1850s rural Ireland is baffled by Anna O'Donnell's fast, which began as a self-inflicted and earnest expression of faith. After weeks of subsisting only on what she calls "manna from heaven," the story of the "miracle" has reached a fever pitch. Tourists flock in droves to the O'Donnell family's modest cabin hoping to witness, and an international journalist is sent to cover the sensational story. Enter Lib, an English nurse trained by Florence Nightingale who is hired to keep watch for two weeks and determine whether or not Anna is a fraud. As Anna deteriorates, Lib finds herself responsible not just for the care of a child, but for getting to the root of why the child may actually be the victim of murder in slow motion. A magnetic novel written with all the spare and propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, THE WONDER works beautifully on many levels--a simple tale of two strangers who will transform each other's lives, a powerful psychological thriller, and a story of love pitted against evil in its many masks.

Book 3 also completed today for #24B42020. This brings my total reading time today to 12hrs and with my 13hrs yesterday that puts me at 25hrs already! 😁 Having insomnia pays off sometimes.

This was another so-so pick for me. I loved the background information on this time in history and the potato famine, but I just never connected with the characters.

I read this ages ago and just couldn‘t figure out how to review it. Fairly far outside of my normal realm, but utterly fascinating. The mystery, religion, culture, family impulses all intertwined to weave an intriguing narrative about a girl who may or may not be miraculously living without eating. I still can‘t decide whether I like the ending. I like the idea but there was just something about it that didn‘t fit right. Still recommend it.

Fictional account based on the real life phenomena of fasting girls - young girls & women in 16th-19th centuries who claimed to be existing only on consuming the Host at Mass & some on nothing at all. It was well written & had some surprisingly dark themes. 4🌟

This novel about a nurse who‘s brought to an Irish village to observe a young girl who has reportedly survived for months without food had me enthralled in the mystery of how this happened. I didn‘t particularly love it on audio because the narrator‘s voice was often so low that I had trouble hearing it while listening in the car, even with the volume turned up.

I might have rated it higher, but the story was pretty slow-going. For the last third of the book or so, I thought it picked up quite a bit, but decided that I‘d keep my rating at “ok”, which is where it fell for me for most of the book. I guess I shouldn‘t have been surprised at the crazy religious people

Really enjoyed this read in spite of the main character having some opinions that were uncomfortable to me. Her inflexible inability to understand the family she is assigned, as a nurse, to observe, makes her difficult to like. But it also adds to the interesting story arc.

I enjoyed the book, set in Ireland in the 1830‘s. The MC is a nurse from England, hired to watch a girl who doesn‘t eat. The Irish Catholic Church and their belief in miracles is a back character in this one. Every family has secrets. #24b4Monday finish #3

This starts slowly and somewhat repetitively but overall I enjoyed it. I liked that the main character, Lib, was unlikeable, that she was often pulled up by the people she was so dismissive of. I enjoyed seeing how the story turned into something she wasn‘t expecting. Overall this is a study of faith, religion, communities, superstitions, and the era when nursing was not recognised as a profession or skill. Interesting and worth the read.

Absolutely riveting! Donoghue really captures how poor Irish lived after the famine and not only religious fervor but how cultural differences and prejudices can cloud ones perception. I was absolutely thrown at one point! Donoghue also created wonderfully unlikable characters!! The photo is of the Irish Famine Memorial, taken on our visit in 2017. *Note below*

IamIamIam Additionally, the memorial was built across the road from the site of a large work house and in which there is a large pauper's field. It was an extremely eerie place to visit and you couldn't have paid me to cross the street into the fields. Famine graves can also be seen in churchyards, marked by a stone with no names. They tend to be mass graves as those starving didn't have provisions for burial. 12mo

I have a REAL problem with Lib. She's so offputting to me and if @Tamra didn't say she enjoyed this so much, I'd think about bailing! First of all, she craps all over these poor people's living conditions and I mean POOR. 1859 poverty stricken Ireland! Lib Wright is an English nurse (trained by the famous Florence Nightingale) who takes a job involving round-the-clock surveillance of an eleven year old girl. Anna hasn‘t eaten for months and her parents are convinced that she is a saint who can subsist on nothing more than air. Lib has her doubts and sets out to prove that someone is slipping food to Anna.

A slow-moving, atmospheric mystery that really got its hooks in me.

The subject matter and time period are not my usual fare, but I like to read something outside my wheelhouse now and then to keep things interesting. The story of a girl in 1800s Ireland who claims she doesn't need to eat (and the skeptical nurse hired to keep watch over her for a fortnight) definitely qualifies. This one sat on my Kindle for two years, but I'm glad I finally got around to reading this well-written and interesting book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

The plot moves incredibly slow and builds frustration in the reader which echos the frustration Lib has in her quest of discovering what is really happening with this little girl. Is she surviving without food, or is there something else going on?

Although slow at times, I was enchanted with Donoghue's work and can't wait to see what she has in store for readers next.

A shocking, slow burning novel that tackles the “fasting girls” phenomenon made popular in the 1800s. Lib, a Nightingale nurse, is hired to watch young Anna, who claims no food has passed her lips in four months. Lib is skeptical and sets out to “debunk” this. What she finds instead is a world full of superstition and religion and how the term faith can have many different definitions. This ended up a pick for me. My “W” for #LitsyAtoZ2018 .

RadicalReader She also wrote an equally incredible novel 1y
