A Darker Shade of Magic
A Darker Shade of Magic: A Novel | V. E. Schwab
From V.E. Schwab, the critically acclaimed author of Vicious, comes a new universe of daring adventure, thrilling power, and parallel Londons, beginning with A Darker Shade of Magic.Kell is one of the last Travelersmagicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel universesas such, he can choose where he lands. There's Grey London, dirty and boring, without any magic, ruled by a mad King George. Then there's Red London, where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the thronea place where people fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. And once upon a time, there was Black London...but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between the royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they'll never seea dangerous hobby, and one that has set him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations, first robs him, then saves him from a dangerous enemy, and then forces him to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure. But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay aliveand that is proving trickier than they hoped.

Te Araroa kilometers tramped: 2523.8 of 3005.3

Do you ever read a book at the wrong time? It seems like I would‘ve liked this one but I couldn‘t get into it. It feels more of a winter read and it‘s currently full summer here. I‘ll try again later but still rate it as a pick. #hoopla

Sunraven I‘m usually reading a billion books at once partly to try to avoid that feeling. Sometimes the wrong time can be while I‘m in the wrong mindset, and I just have to wait an hour or a day ... and then again, sometimes I need to wait a year or two. 😆 1d

For the first 50 pages I wasn't sure I wanted to even continue this book but I am so glad that I did because I loved it. It was just the right amount of humor, adventure, fantasy and plot twists to keep me wanting more. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Though I have had an amazing Valentine's Day emotionally, my body is refusing to play along. So I'm in bed reading while I ride out these flare-ups. I hope everyone else is having a lovely day.
Side note, I just started this book and I'm about 50 pages in and not sure if I like it or not. Does that ever happen to you? I feel like it's 50/50 with me if after the first fifty pages I liked it or end up bailing on it.

1. V.E. Schwab‘s Shades of Magic & Deborah Harkness‘s All Souls Trilogy
2. Most recently was finally adapting to audiobooks last year. I started with Libby and checking them out from the library (which I still do), but then I traded my satellite radio subscription for an Audible subscription. What can I say? I‘m completely addicted. 😀

1. V. E. Schwab‘s Shades of Magic series! I‘ve read the first one, and I own all three—I just haven‘t finished it yet!
2. Reading Inkheart by Cornelia Funke for the first time—I‘m pretty sure this is what really got me into fantasy, and it‘s still one of my all time favorite books!
3. Nico di Angelo, from the Percy Jackson books. In my defense, I was thirteen.

The accidental run in with a woman who needs a package delivered in another world and then a thief snatching it right after sets the gears churning for an adventure Kell and Lila would have never imaged. A story where people aren‘t perfect and a lot of mistakes, this was definitely an enjoyable and realistic experience. Lila was skillful but would be bested at times while Kell realizes that he‘s been extremely sheltered in many situations.

HOTPock3tt Second one is better I think 🤔 @Schnoebs (edited) 3w

I didn't quite enjoy it as much als “Vicious“, but I still had a lot of fun with this book. The characters could've had a little more depth, but in contrary to “Vicious“, here it's clearly the story that's more dragging. I'm not sure yet if I'm going to read the other books as well - but we'll see.

Hi everyone! Sorry for being so absent recently. Right before the holidays I was offered a job in another state and they wanted me to start work on Jan 6th. Well I can officially say that I no longer live in Minnesota and am now living in Michigan for the second time! I‘m super excited about the job and have been enjoying what I‘m starting to get my hands into. It goes along perfectly with my two degrees. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Schnoebs That being said, I‘ve been so busy and overwhelmed at times that I haven‘t been able to concentrate. I went from reading 175 in 2019 to still not having one finished yet. It‘s been really hard and I feel like I‘m almost forcing myself to read at times even though I know that‘s probably not the best thing. 3w
Schnoebs I‘m finally making progress in a book and I‘m now more than half with through with this. It‘s just a bit frustrating because I‘m enjoying it but probably not nearly as much if I was in my normal reading mind space. 3w
Schnoebs Hopefully I‘ll get back there soon. In the mean time, I need to figure things out. My bookcases got damaged in the move so now all my poor little books are on the floor waiting for a new home to come to be shelved on. Now I just need to decide what shelves to get lol #firstworldproblems #newjob #newyear #newhouse #michigan #readingslump #slump 3w

ljuliel Good luck with your new job and the move. Your reading will come back to you as life settles down. Your mind has probably just been on so many big things lately , you need to settle in, get into a routine, then your books will be waiting when you‘re ready. 3w
Schnoebs @ljuliel that‘s exactly what I‘m hoping for. I feel like I‘m slowly starting to get there but I‘m too impatient and want to get back to my reading lol 3w
ljuliel Yes I know. You somehow feel as if you‘re missing a body part if you‘re not reading. It‘ll slowly come back. I don‘t think you can force it. 3w
Megabooks I hope everything is going well and that you‘re happy with the change!! I hope you‘re able to read more as time goes on. Congratulations! 🥂 3w
Schnoebs @Megabooks thanks! I‘m definitely excited about it all. I‘m closer to family which is nice and also a lot of my friends who I haven‘t seen in a long time. It was definitely a quick change and a big move but I‘m happy with the outcome 3w
Schnoebs @HOTPock3tt didn‘t know where I should tell you but here seemed fine lol. Wanted to let you know that I‘ve officially moved to Lansing! 6d
HOTPock3tt @Schnoebs Omg that is soo exciting I‘m soo happy for you!! ♥️🎉That is only an hour and a half away from me!! Maybe we can officially meet at some point!! 🤗 1d
Schnoebs @HOTPock3tt I had a feeling that it was close lol. I‘d totally be down to meet up if you would ever want to! I love Michigan so I‘m very happy to be here permanently and I don‘t plan leave any time soon lol 1d

The magical world created by Schwab is the best thing about the book! Harry Potter fans who enjoyed the last few books would also enjoy this one. It took a bit longer for me to start to understand the many worlds and get gripped by the plot, but once I did, I really enjoyed it. Would recommend as a different, whimsical option!

Book 1 of the year, finished Jan 2, Audio

I really liked this one. A twist on fantasy I hadn't come across before.

4 cities in 4 worlds, all named London by some twist of fate. Connected by magic and only 2 men in all the worlds have the ability to cross between them.

this book was a bit more of a slow burn than I expected but the payoff is pretty good and I absolutely love the setting and magic concepts ? that being said, I'm not a fan of the "knocking out an antagonist but not killing them so they end up coming back later" trope used at a certain point and some of the inklings of instalove ? I'm also not really attached to Kell but Lila? she's amazing and I love her.

#fantasy

ShyBookOwl I just read this too. I really liked it! Lila kind of reminded me of Arya Stark and I love them both. I actually didn't get the instalove feel 🤷🏽‍♀️ maybe I blocked it out since I SO dislike that trope lol 3mo
uwak @ShyBookOwl it's pretty minor, just a couple of kisses and some teasing from side characters but still 😑 Lila strikes me as the type who'd be married to adventure given the option 😄 3mo

I liked the idea of the four Londons, and I was certainly interested in the story. But I felt that it didn‘t have enough character development and that the pacing was off (all bad catastrophic stuff ALL the time). I liked the writing, though, and I‘ll probably read more Schwab in the future.

Kell & Lila & Rhy & Alucard & the alternate London captured me completely. I raced through the series, reading each book as quickly as possible. This is the kind of fantasy I fall for over and over again. Compulsive, immersive, inventive with characters who capture your imagination and make you wish you lived in their world.
