Tom's Midnight Garden | Philippa Pearce
post image

"And the grandfather clock still went on striking, as if it had lost all count of time; and, while it struck, Tom, with joy in his heart, drew the bolt, turned the door-handle, opened the door and walked out into his garden, that he knew was waiting for him."

"Already she had spent many afternoons here, lying in a sandy hollow, hearing only the wind rustling the tops of the grasses, the distant crying of the gulls, and the soft soughing of the sea. It was like being at the very edge of the world."

"I was wondering..." Almanzo paused. Then he picked up Laura's hand that shone white in the starlight, and his sun-browned hand closed gently over it. He had never done that before. "Your hand is so small," he said. Another pause. Then quickly, "I was wondering if you would like an engagement ring."

"That would depend on who offered it to me," Laura told him.

"If I should?" Almanzo asked.

"Then it would depend on the ring," Laura answered...

Anna Hibiscus | Atinuke
post image

"Anna Hibiscus lives in Africa. Amazing Africa. She lives in an old white house with balconies and secret staircases. A wonderful house, in a beautiful garden, inside a compound. The trees are full of sweet, ripe fruit, and the flowers are full of sweet, juicy nectar, because this is Africa, and Africa can be like this."

Mrs. May looked back at her. "Kate," she said after a moment, "stories never really end. They can go on and on and on. It's just that sometimes, at a certain point, one stops telling them." ~Mary Norton

"You will like her," he persisted. "Egad, she's after your own heart, maman! She shot me in the arm."

I let the kids watch shows this morning so I could finish this. 😬 Georgette Heyer is the perfect lighthearted read.

84 Charing Cross Road | Helene Hanff

"I do love secondhand books that open to the page some previous owner read oftenest. The day Hazlitt came he opened to 'I hate to read new books,' and I hollered 'Comrade!' to whoever owned it before me."

Not sure what I think of this one. I definitely couldn't put it down and enjoyed the story but man...I have mixed feelings about that ending.

prosel My thoughts exactly - I was expecting a twist but it wasn't very satisfying 8y
MaryLew @prosel I know, I even had to get on goodreads afterwards to see what other people were saying about it. 8y
