An underwhelming ending neutralized any enjoyment I felt during this otherwise compelling read. I wish Eggers would have opted for a "bad ending" of a different sort, allowing the antagonists' plans to come to fruition as a warning to the readers about the risks of forfeiting liberty for security.

I have yet to see the movie, but odds are I'll be recommending it over the book.
