The Circle
The Circle | Dave Eggers
The Circle is the exhilarating new novel from Dave Eggers, best-selling author ofA Hologram for the King,a finalist for the National Book Award. When Mae Holland is hired to work for the Circle, the worlds most powerful internet company, she feels shes been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency. As Mae tours the open-plan office spaces, the towering glass dining facilities, the cozy dorms for those who spend nights at work, she is thrilled with the companys modernity and activity. There are parties that last through the night, there are famous musicians playing on the lawn, there are athletic activities and clubs and brunches, and even an aquarium of rare fish retrieved from the Marianas Trench by the CEO. Mae cant believe her luck, her great fortune to work for the most influential company in the worldeven as life beyond the campus grows distant, even as a strange encounter with a colleague leaves her shaken, even as her role at the Circle becomes increasingly public. What begins as the captivating story of one womans ambition and idealism soon becomes a heart-racing novel of suspense, raising questions about memory, history, privacy, democracy, and the limits of human knowledge.

A good portion of Eggers' message has already been disseminated via episodes of Black Mirror, but The Circle remains a worthwhile, & timely book. Mae Holland lands a much coveted job at the titular social media corporation, a hodgepodge of real life companies, & is promptly overwhelmed by the glib Newspeak of corporate culture. It is this aspect & the psyche of someone deeply mired in social media, shot through with black humor, that makes it work

Reviews of The Circle seem pretty mixed. I have to say, I loved it.

I listened on audio, and the pace of it had me on the edge of my seat a good deal of the time.

It‘s a terrifying commentary on social media taking over our lives, and beyond that, taking control of the world really.

Watching the MC, Mae, be drawn deeper and deeper into her online life, I continually thought about brainwashing, and it made me happy that I‘ve gotten off FB!

Bookwormjillk Glad to know it‘s good on audio! 2mo
sudi I'm stacking this because of your review, hoping the books turns out good 😊 2mo

Hooked_on_books I loved it, too! I think it‘s a great, chilling critique of social media. I‘m a little surprised at the negative reviews. In other news, my owl post book arrived yesterday! I have less than an hour left of The Circle, and less than half of The Wishing Spell.

One of my bookclubs chose Disappearing Earth for next year- but not until July! I just can‘t wait that long! Starting later tonight probably. Recommended by @Hooked_on_books and @Mitch 🥰

And I‘m pretty sure @AmyG recommended City of Girls for me. 🥰

No better time to revive my dormant Litsy page than while honeymooning with @LiteraryinLititz at a 3-day ‘reading retreat‘ on the eastern coast of England! If you‘re skeptical of modern social media and behavioral tracking (as we both are), this book provides a kind of 1984-lite experience, though I was hoping for a slightly more persuasive argument in favor of privacy and digital autonomy to contrast with the blind zealotry of the Circle.

QuietlyLaura Congratulations! I hope you both will be very happy! ❤️🎉🎊❤️ 2mo

Mae might have been a 24-year old college graduate hired into the California tech-savvy, The Circle, but she was written like a middle-schooler dropped mid-term into a new school and desperate to fit in. This book contained sooo much social commentary. With all that and my I-don‘t-give-a-shit-about-Mae, the MC, I had no perspective in which to take away whatever it was this book wanted me to receive.

...And sharks eat anything!

claudiuo Thanks a lot for your review. I have this book on my TBR list but reading your notes made me move it way down, there are many other more interesting books in need of my attention. Thank you! 4mo
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego I did not like this book either. 4mo
marleed @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @claudiuo I felt like the author pulled every concern with technology in our daily lives, dropped it into Word and retrofitted a story around it. Had he concentrated on fewer concerns and given us an MC we wanted to understand, it might have been better for me. 4mo

marleed @DivineDiana I‘m interested to see the movie. Perhaps if I‘d have pictured Emma Watson as Mae or Tom Hanks as Eamon I might have been more invested in their characters. It just fell flat for me. I read it for an upcoming IRL bookclub so it will be fun to hear their input. I‘ve rated 2 books in the last 2 weeks on the low side but it does make me appreciate my other reads! 4mo

Very clever, disturbing and thought provoking read. Don‘t bother watching the movie on Netflix. It is completely different from the book and not very good either.

I listened to the audio, and had no trouble following without losing interest. I really liked this. It was hard to fathom how she could get more and more sucked in to that life and not realize the implications. I guess I felt like she had been brainwashed, like a cult. In fact, pretty much all of them had “drunk the Kool-Aid”! It was an interesting tale of taking social media way too far

This book may seem exaggerated in its dystopian vision but is it really so? I look at our world and encounter uncomfortable similarities. #Booked2019 #SocialMediaFocus @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft

Cinfhen It was a little too close for comfort but I hated how Eggers made the MC such a dishrag 😬 8mo
LeticiaToraci @Cinfhen I think that the style of writing had a bit of magical realism to it, for example, when Mae met that old couple on the barge it was as if she was meeting her parents who were hiding after the circle was completed. Many thing seemed to be made intentionally for symbolic reasons, one of them being Mae's utter lack of consciousness. 8mo
Cinfhen I honestly wasn‘t reading so intently... I missed a lot of those nuances😬 8mo
LeticiaToraci When I like a book I usually have theories about it, if they are correct or the right way to interpret the book Idk, but I often imagine them. 😉 8mo

I listened to this on audio in my car, and I was so invested that I wished that I had copies in multiple formats! Sharing is caring is one of the mottos of the technology company known as The Circle. And we certainly do already live in a world of likes, smiles and comments. What if one company had the power to take all the data for the country and use it to achieve their goals? Did not see the movie. Finished4/30. #booked2019 #socialmediafocus

I have avoided this one after seeing some bad reviews... but I begrudgingly put it on my tbr when it was added to the #1001books list last year, and I needed a #socialmediafocus book for #Booked2019, so here we are.

I really enjoyed this audiobook! The MC is unlikable in her selfish naivety and it‘s sort of preachy, but it‘s also scary how easily we could get here as a society. Definitely in the vein of 1984 Fahrenheit 451. 😱

Not a fan.

The story: Mae is hired to work at The Circle, and its everything she ever wanted - it‘s a dream job.

Socializing is one thing, but just how far into personal lives should one really go?

My take: Poor writing style. Breaking the book into three segments did NOT work for me. Way too hard to read without having a defined breaking point.

Why the Pan: Mae‘s downward spiral was way too fast and unrealistic. She became so unlikable.

So yeah, literary dystopian science fiction is a thing apparently. Though, truth be told, this is like reading horror—though not new, I can‘t imagine anything worse than the vision but forward in this book, a world in which “Secrets are lies, Sharing is caring, Privacy is theft.” Mae goes to work at Circle, the most powerful internet company in the world, & the story goes from there. Ok, but not great. Definitely a scary vision of the future.

2BR02B It really depends. If it's a book I've already been meaning to read for awhile, I'll try to read the book first. If I discovered the movie before the book, I usually watch the movie first. A contemporary attempt at a "1984"-esque story, using the internet and social media. But where no one the world has ever read "1984", and everyone is happily willing to give up their rights and freedoms. The concept had potential, but the execution was over the top & unrealistic. And the main character was an unrelatable moron. How did this become a movie?! ?

bookandcat The movie fixes some of the problematic issues with the book but isn't a great movie. That being said, nearly all of the book actually currently exists in one way or another or is based on something that exists. I don't see it as unrealistic at all in that sense. But it's a bit of a weird book, I will say that. 1y
Cailey_Mac Yeah, I ended up DNF‘ing after a particular scene where I was like “Why did she go see him AGAIN???” Like the main character seemed like she might have some intelligence and the book is all “lemme fix that” 🙄🤦🏻‍♀️ 1y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Cailey_Mac Seriously. I'm peeved at how little the male author thinks of women. She's a pathetic lemming. If the character was so dynamic, universal, relatable, and realistic then why couldn't he have written it from a male perspective? I don't think any educated person (Mae) would have not at least internally questioned her situation. And it only got worse from where u left it. 1y

Rare case of reading the book AFTER I saw the film. I wasn‘t thrilled with the film, and might not have bothered, but after so many requests then a used copy for Q9.60 how could I resist ?

Irony not lost in this book pick for the “Richardson reads one book” 📚 selection 🤭

Zelma 😳😂 yeah, that is odd but kind of appropriate choice. 2y

Day 20: Book You‘ve Reread—I don't reread often. I read The Circle right after publication (liked a lot), and again earlier this year for neighborhood book group (not so much). I read Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil before our March/April road trip, and again in the car with DH (his 1st time) as we left Savannah/headed home. Reading it before & after enhanced my enjoyment of the trip significantly. #RiotGrams #SoManyBooksSoLittleTime

Sums up The Circle. How many of us are putting our heads and this of others in the guillotine or encouraging our young to do so? 🤔 🤭

The Circle | Dave Eggers

It is disturbing to observe that all the active villains in The Circle are female: Mae is presented as the sexual predator, the stalker, the one without a conscience, Annie the person who got her into all this with the shady racist, classist and criminal ancestry, the located criminal is a woman who killed her own children but the controllers behind it all who never admit any responsibility are, you guessed it: male. Eggers: was this intentional?
