What can I say, this man was a genius.
Absolutely loved this. I can‘t wait for something new from Eowyn Ivey
“Even through the cushion of their thick coats, Jack could feel her small arm folded in his, and it was as if his very heart were cradled in those joined elbows.” 😭😭
“She wound herself tightly, as if within her girdled ribs she could contain all possibilities, all futures and all deaths. Perhaps if she held herself just right. Maybe if she knew what would be or could be. Or if she wished with enough heart. If only she could believe.”
“Could there be such a child? If an old man and woman conjured a little girl out of the snow and wilderness, what would she be to them? A daughter? A ghost?
This was such an interesting concept and you can‘t really knock Barbara Kingsolver. I found the characters a little unbelievable at times, or maybe I just wasn‘t connecting with Dellarobia. Overall an enjoyable read though.
Kay Ryan (2007-2010). Favorite poems: “This Life, “Force,” “A Plain Ordinary Steel Needle Can Float I‘m Pure Water,” “Crown.”
“The world is before you and you need not take it or leave it as it was when you came in.”
This just wasn‘t doing it for me. Solid writing, punchy dialogue, and true to the spirit of Holmes in my mind. It just didn‘t get me excited. I was hoping for a deeper and more nuanced character in Mary. Maybe another time? 90 pages in.
This was a great read! Humorous, intelligent, and thought-provoking. I loved the illustrations and layout. The authors felt like new witchy friends welcoming me into the secret world of self-love and confidence that can come from accessing one‘s witchy side. The overall message was very empowering, and the spells provided and the suggestions for creating your own spells really sparked my creativity! 🧙🏻♀️
Loving this cover 😍🐝
“I imagine that one of the reasons people cling to their hates so stubbornly is because they sense, once hate is gone, that they will be forced to deal with pain.”
From Notes of a Native Son
W. S. Merwin (2010-2011). Favorite poems: “Fox Sleep,” “Good People,” and “Good Night.”
From “Fox Sleep” by W. S. Merwin, poet laureate 2010-2011
“Americans, unhappily, have the most remarkable ability to alchemize all bitter truths into an innocuous but piquant confection and to transform their moral contradictions, or public discussion of such contradictions, into a proud decoration, such as are given for heroism on the field of battle.”
“Nobody actually looks like what they really are on the inside. You don‘t. I don‘t. People are much more complicated than that. It‘s true of everybody.”
“As a little girl, I used to make a promise to myself and seal it with a prayer: ‘If I ever get out, I‘ll be in awe of everything I see. I pray that my father‘s voice will stay shut away in this house and won‘t follow me everywhere I go.‘”
Incredible read. A truly harrowing and heartbreaking story, at times very difficult to read, but ultimately so inspiring. The first-person present narration made it an unusual memoir reading experience.
