Out & about preparing for our upcoming 16 day holiday (only 3 more sleeps!) I was shaking my head & tutting myself on the way out of the op shop today.
But at the same time, nearly bursting with sheer delight for the rest of the day at my new haul!

I've obviously committed to the Divergent series as I bought the 2nd & 3rd books.
She's Come Undone I'm super excited about as I saw it on a best 100 list yesterday.

Thanks for the tag @ElizaMarie ! Yay for #tbrcrew .
1. So I live in southern CA so never snow for me. BUT I was just in NH for work and got hit with 4-5 inches of snow so that was cool. Well until I got flight delays coming back .
2. I don‘t really have a need for a remedy but I guess if I did it would be coZy blankets. I‘m a mood reader but not based off the weather.
3. I‘ll tag anyone who hasn‘t done it yet. I‘m horrible at remembering names

ElizaMarie I love seeing snow until I have to work with the whole driving to work in it (I have taken two different contracts that had slight snow and although it was pretty on my day off, it was horrible on a day I worked). I am kinda. mood reader as well. Thats why I am not good at making TBR lists too much (well I have a TBR list but I do deviate off of it when the mood strikes). 2w

I wanted to love this book. It was my last book of 2019...a snowy story for a rather warm December. There were moments of such beautiful writing... I could see the stunning landscapes and feel the bitter cold. I also grew to love all the characters. However, I felt like the author couldn't decide which direction to go. It felt like we should know some ultimate answer when the book ended, but really I was just left wanting more!

A lovely Snow Child scene created by our discussion leader at bookclub today. Can't say I was as much a fan of magical realism vs. reality aspect But, I think it is worth thinking more about the symbolism of cold vs. warmth. Are there ways in which we might feel confined in situations that others find comforting? What influence do culture & experience play in our perceptions of cold vs. warmth; dependence vs. autonomy; aloneness vs. loneliness?

Talewaggingreads Thought provoking questions. 📚🧠❣☃️⛱ 2mo

The children‘s book in this photo was one of my favorites as a child. I wasn‘t sure when I picked up the novel if it was a re-telling of the same story and was pleasantly surprised that it is, of course Ivey has added so much to the story. The vivid details of the snowy scenes and wildlife are written with beautiful imagery. This was a great book to read in December. I also enjoyed the magical realism, how it can be read as magical or perhaps not.

Prairiegirl_reading I love the novel so much! It‘s a perfect winter read. For sure an all time favourite!! I had never heard of the fairy tale before reading the novel and I have to say I‘m kind of jealous! 3mo

Today‘s author spotlight: Eowyn Ivey! The 46-year-old Alaska resident and mother was named by her mother after the character in The Lord of the Rings. She grew up in the Alaskan wilderness, where her family grew and hunted their food. She was a newspaper reporter before becoming a bookseller. She was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for the tagged book. She has two published novels so far. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Big news! I found the newest addition to my favourites shelf. This book was absolutely amazing. There were many times when I just read a paragraph or a page over and over because the writing was so perfect. The story had a vague magical quality while managing to remain grounded in realism, and I loved the characters and relationships. It was all done so well ❄️🦊

#LetsTravelAugust Day 5: The unforgiving lands of #Alaska are featured prominently in this story. Childless and carrying the burden of bereavement, Jack and Mabel had originally moved to #Alaska with the intention of getting away from it all: the multiple miscarriages, the well-meaning hovering of family members, the sight and sound of growing children a testament to their own grief that will never go away. It was a heatwave that made me pick up this book - 39C/102F! I was craving something cold. A story of freezing temperatures and the quiet, the stillness of winter. For summer is LOUD. And The Snow Child was just what these unbearably hot few days needed. Read my review https://reallifereading.com/2019/06/27/the-snow-child-by-eowyn-ivey/

A fairy tale about a childless, unhappy couple struggling to survive the harsh climate of Alaska in the 1920s. One day in a moment of whimsy they build a "snow girl.” The next day, they find the snow girl gone and a blond, silent little girl in their barn. This is a character-driven story where not a whole lot happens after that, yet the story is melancholic and you read it with the expectation that something is going to happen, any minute now.

I live right at the northern most tip of Kentucky. I‘m all about literary fiction, classic & contemporary. But I also adore a well-built fantasy world. My favorite author is tough. I did feel a little connected to the author because of our Alaskan ties. I remember the dark days well. I enjoyed the beginning of this story very much.
