The War that Saved My Life | Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
Pickpick

A sweet, quiet story of a girl with a club foot and her little brother who are evacuated from London to a seaside town during WWI. This is the perfect book for those who like slow-growth characters, people that gradually thaw and develop. A 2016 Newbery Honor book.

This book began as a year-long email conversation between Cooper and his mother. In her long life and in her writing, Vanderbilt is the impulsive, confessional artist; Cooper is more reserved and inquisitive, ever the journalist. I wanted more from him, more about their times together. A quick read.

Pickpick

Just finished this book this morning, then lucked into hearing an interview with Quick on NPR. This book contains teen angst, the power of literature and love, poetry, the importance of being yourself, and a really dynamic use of first person.

And I wondered if that was the problem with literature--it made sense only in theoretical situations and didn't often help in real life, where it took a hell of a lot more courage to live than to turn pages all alone, hidden away from the world in a corner or a bed or under a tree.

LeaKelley Can't wait to hear about this one. 8y

Loving this book so far! I'm slowing down to savor every minute with Dill, Lydia, and Travis.

LeaKelley This is in my read-soon stack. 8y
