Panic
Panic | Lauren Oliver
From New York Times bestselling author Lauren Oliver comes an extraordinary novel of fear, friendship, courage, and hope that Kirkus Reviews says "will have readers up until the wee hours," School Library Journal raves is "fast-paced and captivating," and E. Lockhart, author of We Were Liars, calls "a thrill a minute."Panic began as so many things do in Carp, a poor town of twelve thousand people in the middle of nowhere: because it was summer, and there was nothing else to do. Heather never thought she would compete in panic, a legendary game played by graduating seniors. She'd never thought of herself as fearless, the kind of person who would fight to stand out. But when she finds something, and someone, to fight for, she will discover that she is braver than she ever thought. Dodge has never been afraid of panic. His secret will fuel him, and get him all the way through the game; he's sure of it. But what he doesn't know is that he's not the only one with a secret. Everyone has something to play for. For Heather and Dodge, the game will bring new alliances, unexpected revelations, and the possibility of first love for each of themand the knowledge that sometimes the very things we fear are those we need the most.

Book 76🎧 2.5⭐️

I really wanted to like this one but it just didn‘t do it for me. It reminded me a lot of “The Game”…. And I preferred that one over this.

I thought The Game was too short, and this one too long! I just didn‘t feel the tension in this and it fell flat. Not enough razzle dazzle to keep my attention✨

But I heard good things about the show, so I‘ll give that a shot!🙃

AudiobookingWithLeah I didn't care for this, either... 2y
BeeMagical @AUDIOBOOKINGWITHLEAH For all the hype, it let me down🙁 A lot of tiger talk too😂 (edited) 2y

I went into this wanting more Ray and boy was I disappointed. I read this because I binge watched the show in all it's cheesy, ridiculous drama. This was just as eye-rolly dramatic but like.. how did the show come from this? Nearly every character is different (some better, some worse) and really there's just the premise of the game, some challenges, and a tiger that's the same. The ending of this sucked and have I mentioned like no Ray? Wtf.

night_shift Ok, but seriously both have convoluted plots and clichéd characters and the book, especially, has really cringe moments. I was so not keen on the switching POV between Heather and Dodge, who's motivations for doing Panic made a little more sense via show. Heather's initial motivation at the beginning of the book had me 🙄 hard. So lame. 3y

I enjoyed reading this book for a second time. I really delved into it this time. The first time I read it was when I was in high school.
There‘s action, suspense, romance, & a little bit of mystery. Sounds like a lot, but Lauren Oliver handles it effortlessly. The character arcs for both the main and secondary characters were my favorite. I think they were important for a book like this.
Going to watch the show now.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ ½ • Read in advance of the Prime Video series. YA page turner that was a welcome addition to my mix. Kinda dark for YA, I think.

Heather and Dodge both decide to participate in the town game Panic. In the game, they take on random, dangerous challenges in order to win the big pot at the end. Who will win?
This book has been adapted in a series, which comes out Friday on Amazon Prime.

Mainly read this because I saw it was being turned into a tv show. An interesting premise. It could be fun to see how well it plays out on the small screen.

This book is part coming of age drama and part action thriller. I loved the gritty realistic vibe and not knowing what was going to happen next. I highly recommend Panic for teen and and adult audiences.
🎧 Listened as audio and the narrator Sarah Drew did an excellent job. 4 stars

Panic is a game based on fears...Lauren Oliver has a way of making you feel a little bit uncomfortable the entire time you read the book. Success again.

It‘s been ages since I‘ve read one of Oliver‘s books- but this YA thriller is an entertaining and quick read that‘s been languishing on my #MtTBR for years! It‘s sort of a re-imagining of the Hunger Games, but set in a small town in NY- and with deadly dares rather than a high tech post-apocalyptic government setting the stakes. There are some predictable parts, but some real surprises too- probably between a so-so and a pick!

Megabooks This is my favorite of hers! 5y
TorieStorieS @Megabooks I can see why! It was practically a #OneSittingRead for me!! 😊 5y

I really enjoyed this book and I do recommend it
I liked the characters as annoying as they might be at some points, however it‘s not one of the best books I‘ve read. The mystery was too obvious for me and the last chapter was a little boring.

I would love a cover change, I feel that a tiger would be more appropriate and more aesthetically pleasing.

The concept is enticing, but the delivery was lackluster. The writing wasn't so great. Definitely got boring quite often. The only redeeming aspect was the characters. Never bothered to read the sequels.

Panic, by Lauren Oliver, is one of those books that's really hard to put down. The tension is maintained throughout the novel, as was my curiosity. #WhatToRead #booklover #YoungAdultBooks #YoungAdult #YA #YABooks #Contemporary

I listened to this book on audio because I needed something to listen to while at work. This book is not like and should not be compared to the Hunger Games. While there are some similar aspects this book is its own. Given that, it was suspenseful in some parts, particularly towards the end. Some of the characters quickly got on my nerves but the story is well told. Not a fan of the audiobook narrator though.

Fast-paced, well-rounded characters, and (coming from a poor community) an interesting yet believable premise. The ending left a few things unexplored that I really felt would have made this a more complete novel. Still, I enjoyed it.

Continuing with my enjoyment of Lauren Oliver's standalone novels, Panic was actually the first of hers that I read. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. There's a great building of tension as the stakes are raised higher and higher. It's small-town life at its lowest and darkest.
