A warm, funny and unflinchingly honest account of the lives of a group of book-lovers and friends in starving and oppressed wartime Guernsey. I've read it twice now and still can't see where one writer ended and the other took over, so carefully is it written. Brilliant stuff.

Navin gives her six-year-old protoganist Zach a unique and utterly believable voice as he navigates his way through his complex feelings about a family tragedy. Beautifully written, and unforgettable.
