Pretty sure you're not supposed to introduce ~6 new characters, including the narrator, in the first chapter. (This was one of many compounding reasons for why I stopped reading this book.)
"'But I don't understand,' Simon stammered, 'what *is* the Insidious Humdrum? Is he a man?'" (193). #literally the best line in the book.
I swear to god, if I ever run into Steven Jay Schneider on the street, I'll shove all 11 editions down his throat. Makes a good reference book though.
