Summer of My German Soldier
Summer of My German Soldier | Bette Greene
In Bette Greenes awardwinning debut novel, a young Jewish girl in the postwar South finds herself drawn to a German prisoner of war When the Army delivers a batch of Nazi prisoners of war to an internment camp in Jenkinsville, Arkansas, Patty Bergen is as anxious as any of her neighbors to get a glimpse of the monsters. The eldest child in the towns sole Jewish family, Patty is lonely and isolated, spending most of her time in the company of Ruth, her parents black housekeeper. Then she meets Anton Reiker, an inmate in the camp. Even though he fought against the Allies, Anton seems to understand Patty in a way even her parents never have. When Anton escapes from the camp, Patty risks everything to keep him safebut following her heart may come at a terrible price. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Bette Greene including rare photos and never-before-seen documents from the authors personal collection.

At the heart of it, it‘s a coming-of-age story about a misunderstood girl. As such, the ending was unsatisfying to me. It left me wanting closure. But what was so unique was that I didn‘t expect one. One of my cooler finds from the book sale (as it‘s signed by the author).

I remember seeing this in my school library as a kid but I somehow never read it. 🤔

JoScho Score! 💕 7y
DebinHawaii Great score! I read this a few times in grade school and saw the 1978 television movie with Kristy McNichol! Damn, I'm old (and apparently watched FAR too many TV movies!!!) 🤣🤣🤣 7y

DeborahSmall I take it you‘re home! I can get your parcel posted next week ❤️ 7y
LeahBergen @DebinHawaii I should have known that there was TV movie (and that Kristy McNichol was in it 😂😂😂)! And hey, those bad TV movies are all we pretty much had to look forward to as young teens back then. 😂😂 7y
LeahBergen @ValerieAndBooks I just knew it would be familiar to a certain group of us. 😆 7y
LeahBergen @Reggie I don‘t know how I didn‘t as my school library wasn‘t really that big. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
LeahBergen @DeborahSmall I made sure I made it home in time for our big book sales. Priorities! 😆😆 7y
DeborahSmall Of course! Hope you had a wonderful trip! Missed you 😘 7y

Wow, this book was so good ! It isn't at all what I expected it to be. It covered dark themes such as abuse, racism and neglect and the issues of such a complex friendship between a Jewish girl and a Nazi soldier during WWII. Really glad I discovered this book on good reads !

Oryx I remember reading this in school, I remember it being really good. 8y
