Pickpick

“The Silver Star”, written by Jeanette Walls, is a novel that reflects the life of two little girls, Jean and Liz, trying their best to get by without a father figure and a mother figure most of the time. Their mother, an aspiring actress and singer, with no real success, constantly leaves the girls to meet with directors or other musicians to try and make a name for herself. After a meltdown with the girls, she packed her bags leaving the girls…

During the five weeks their mother was gone, Liz and Jean found out the truth about their fathers, which their mother never wished to reveal. When mother returned to take the girls again, a series of meltdowns unfolded, leaving the girls no choice but to move back with their uncle. This time the girls had… 2y

A series of court appearances and lots of stress lead the girls to yet again face even more hardships without their mother. The point of view in this story is told in first person by Jean, the younger of the two sisters. Her perspective throughout the hardships really… 2y

The author of this novel uses genius first-person techniques by showcasing a sense of innocence and wit in the narration. Seeing extreme hardship and struggle through the eyes of a child is an incredible way to demonstrate the point of view of this novel, leaving the story to be tear-jerking and very heartwarming. 2y

Carried Away On the Crest of a Wave is a play written in memory of those who unfortunately passed away during the deadliest tsunami ever recorded: the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami that killed over 250k individuals across 46 different countries. This play consists of a series of nine stories that come together as a complementary ensemble. These stories are from people across the world who experienced different events on the day of the tsunami.

grace.hartman Some stories were based on individuals who survived after the storm, while others were from across the world watching the event unfold on television and how they reacted to it. These nine stories, although not all about those who endured the tsunami, connect to each other in some way, which highlights the theme of this play. The theme present is a theme of hope and connection. A hope that there is calm after the storm and the idea that we are 2y
grace.hartman never alone. It represents how the world is smaller than we may think, and how a disastrous event in some area of the world can connect us all as human beings. If you like plays that take a unique twist on classic story plots or plays that add instances of comic relief and the right amount of emotion, then I recommend this play to you. 2y
