I‘ve read this book before, but I just had to read it again. It‘s one of those books that you could reread a hundred times. Rainbow Rowell is definitely my favourite author-- I can‘t get enough of her writing. I‘m not much of a reader, but I waited impatiently for this book to be released and read it all in one sitting after I got my hands on it. The realistic characters, the different points of view… It‘s so good. (cont.)

jessicawatson This is the book following Carry On, where Simon, the main character, the most powerful mage, finds out he was never meant to be the magical heroic main character. He‘s just a normal guy. His journey ended. He graduated from school, his classmates went their separate ways. Everything was over. Instead of the author trying to drag on the story, she showed us what would‘ve really happened. 4y

jessicawatson Simon gets depressed. His relationship with Baz, his boyfriend, is struggling since he was going to school. He goes to therapy after being in such horrible fights… Slaying dragons and whatnot would be pretty scary. He lives in an apartment with Baz and his best friend, Penny, who realizes she needs to do something about the slump that Simon has gotten himself into and help him and Baz‘s relationship. So, she forces them on a road trip to America. 4y

jessicawatson They use magic for a lot of things they probably shouldn‘t use magic for, such as getting passports and a car for them to use, but they make it work. We follow them across America, a country they know nothing about, other than that Penny‘s boyfriend lives there, and so does Simon‘s ex-girlfriend. 4y

jessicawatson We get to see the characters just being themselves in the normal world and working through real life problems, like relationship issues, instead of all the mythical creature fighting and spell casting from before.

jessicawatson If you like books about magic but still want to closely relate to the characters and the setting, this book is for you. The author‘s writing is just so real-- it always feels like you‘re there. It sucks you in. It‘s written in first person POV (my favourite), but we get the point of view of mostly all the characters in the book. 4y

jessicawatson The way the author switches between characters is one of my favourite things about her writing-- it‘s not awkward at all and makes it so much better. It usually switches every chapter, but sometimes it can even switch back and forth, like three times on one page. 4y

jessicawatson I love how It can add contrast. Like in this book, when we hear Simon‘s inner thoughts about how beautiful the view is, and then hear Baz‘s inner thoughts about how boring America is. The jumping between Simon and Baz is especially fitting, because the fact that they don‘t communicate well is one of the main problems in this book. Seeing their thoughts about each other side by side is really interesting. It‘s a must-read.

jessicawatson If you like books about building friendships and relationships, or being able to see a young person go through the same struggles that a lot of high-schoolers do, this is an exciting and immersive story with just the right amount of action to keep you interested. This is definitely one of the best books I‘ve ever read. It‘s cliche enough to make you laugh, but not so much to make you cringe. I picked it up last minute and was pleasantly surprised. 4y

jessicawatson One of the main themes in this book is about overcoming internal conflict and mental disability. Nick has trouble functioning like his peers, and he finds himself in a lot of really bad or awkward situations that are usually self-inflicted. He gets overwhelmed and has a lot of internal conflict throughout the book because of his tendency to overthink, and because of his differences from the rest of the world. 4y

jessicawatson Despite all of this, he accepts himself and has a group of friends who understand and love him and his antics. It‘s a heartwarming and down-to-earth story.
