Cambodia Noir
Cambodia Noir | Nick Seeley
Phnom Penh, Cambodia: the end of the line. Lawless, drug-soaked, forgottenits where bad journalists go to die. For once-great war photographer Will Keller, thats kind of a mission statement. But Wills spiral toward oblivion is interrupted by Kara Saito, a beautiful young woman who shows up and begs Will to help find her sister, June, who disappeared during a stint as an intern at the local paper. The Phnom Penh underworld is in an uproar after a huge drug bust, but June came with secrets and terrors of her own. Cambodia is not the only place shes traveled, or the worst, and the more Will learns about her past, the more danger they both are in... Propulsive, electric, and filled with unforgettable characters, Cambodia Noir marks the arrival of a fresh new talent. Nick Seeleys debut novel is a powerful and unsettling exploration of loss, and being lost, and what happens when we go too far into the dark.

I liked it! Fast paced detective story about a missing American girl and the self-destructive photo journalist who is enlisted to find her. The author also throws in some political posturing, drug wars, army coups and a love interest. Quick and dirty read.

Super excited to get this one started today. Written by a former journalist about a former journalist investigating the disappearance of a newspaper intern. Love it!

wintercherry This isn't a book for everyone, it's dark & trippy, but I really enjoyed it. Very atmospheric, Cambodia clings to you from the pages. 8y

Will Keller, war photographer, is more than happy to get lost in Cambodia‘s underbelly and forget his past. Despite his efforts, he is drawn into a search for a lost girl, a trip that takes him across the country & through his past. The author draws on personal career experience as a photojournalist to bring life (and death) to this hauntingly stark and brutal novel. I read this in one night, unable and unwilling to drag out the suspense. -Rachel

Really good, though the plot was a little more convoluted than it needed to be. But absolutely lovely writing. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Had to stay up to finish this bad boy in one sitting. An American photojournalist in Phnom Penh is confronted by a woman to help her find her sister. It's a wild goose chase filled w/crime & secrets. Fast-paced & full of emotion, Seeley paints a realistic pic of the gritty underbelly of Cambodia.

BookishFeminist Also, THAT COVER THOUGH. 💀 8y

I am really liking Seeley's writing style and mix of cultural and political info with the plot. No info dumps is always a good thing! Hoping this one is a 5 star read. It is on it's way!

"Cambodia has been through more than any of us and has endured. We can endure." This book had some very insightful things to say under the guise of a crime thriller.
