"Cambodia has been through more than any of us and has endured. We can endure." This book had some very insightful things to say under the guise of a crime thriller.

"You can't lift curses with kisses" - best. Chapter title. EVER.

Bought this when I visited NYC last year (to see Madonna!!) and today I'm feeling quite wanderlust-y. I haven't read this book yet but I think I will start soon.

One of the few MG books I read and enjoyed as an adult. The button-thing - I mean, that's just creepy!

This looked like such a good book and the cover was lovely. But it was awfully written, I just could NOT. So I left it at the airport's "flybrary" for someone else to try.

flowersquiet That cover IS awfully nice to look at. 8y

And isn't it a GORGEOUS book? Divided into two sections: one young black girl who will do anything to fit in with white expectations; and another who is becoming more proud of her blackness.

Oh I loved how this book was written. And: a map!! I've never really been interested in Iron Age and Roman-era lit but this was so good. The magical element was well-done. I need more of this book. And it needs waaaaay more attention.

todd I haven't heard about this one yet. Thanks! 8y

I'm a little obsessed with book dedications, and this is spot-on. Coconut is a South African book about the complexities of growing up black in post-Apartheid South Africa - but it's so relevant to other countries, too.

Liz Book dedications are in of the first things I look for when perusing books at the store or library. 👌 8y
thelittlestbiblio I find them fascinating as well 💕 Book dedications can tell you a lot about the author and the book you're about to read. 8y
