"If you have any regard to your future happiness, any view of living comfortably with a husband, any hope of preserving your fortunes, or restoring them after any disasters, never, ladies marry a fool; any husband rather than a fool..."
Roxana or The Fortune Mistress
This story of a courtesan whose past catches up with her didn't really grab me
This novel is nearly 300 years old. Not bad exactly, but I found it tiring. The language is old and the scandals wouldn‘t be so scandalous today. Not that I would want to be friends with “Roxana”. Of course, today a woman wouldn‘t have to stay single to keep control of her money, and it‘s much harder to lose people or to be lost. A different sort of story for a different time. #1001books
My current #1001booksread. It takes a bit to get going, but I‘m a third of the way through! Also I love this cover.
#Itwasagoodday when I chose to change my major and join the English Department. So many wonderful professors, and so many great books over those years.
