Rashomon: And Other Stories
Rashomon: And Other Stories | Ryunosuke Akutagawa
10 posts | 21 read | 6 to read
"Clear-eyed glimpses of human behavior in the extremities of poverty, stupidity, greed, vanity Story-telling of an unconventional sort, with most of the substance beneath the shining, enameled surface." "The New York Times Book Review" This collection of six short stories, most of which have never been translated before, includes "In a Grove," a psychologically sophisticated tale about murder, rape, and suicide; "Rashomon," the story of a thief scared into honesty by an encounter with a ghoul; and "Kesa and Morito," the story of man driven to kill someone he doesn't hate by a lover whom he doesn't love. "There are enough Swiftian touches in Akutagawa to show his hatred of stupidity, greed, hypocrisy and the rising jingoism of the day. But Akutagawa's artistic integrity kept him from joining his contemporaries in the easy social criticism or naive introspection What he did was question the values of his society, dramatize the complexities of human psychology, and study, with a Zen taste for paradox, the precarious balance of illusion and reality." Howard Hibbett, from the Introduction of" Rashomon and Other Stories" Classic Japanese stories include: In a GroveRashomonYam GruelThe MartyrKesa and MoritoThe Dragon"

Saturday reading plans. Might watch the Kurosawa film later. It's been years since I've seen it & I have only vague memories of it.

Bookwomble I've got this same edition tbr. I keep swearing to read it soon, and somehow it gets put off (saying that as though it's not me putting it off! 😆). 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble I just read the first 4 stories and I found all of them fascinating, especially the title story & In a Bamboo Grove 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory That sounds good 🙂 I read Kappa a few years ago and enjoyed that, even though I suspect I missed a lot of the cultural allusions. 2y

Pickpick

I think Rashomon is a fascinating story to examine, even if it wasn't my favourite for pleasure reading. The descriptions were golden and the morals vs survival plot was interesting. Let me know what you thought. You can read my full review in the link below.

Our latest #litereads selection is Rashomon by Ryunosuke Akutagawa, the classic short story that inspired the title of the classic Japanese film (although it was a different Akutagawa story to inspire the bulk of the plot of the movie). You can find a link to read the full story in the full article below. I hope you enjoy the story. Be sure to let me know what you think!

I‘m not very good at doing TBR lists - I‘m more of a mood reader. However I am reading the full set of 50 Penguin Moderns this year, one each week. Here are the 4 books on the list for February.

Mehso-so

I am attempting to include classic books from other cultures as well as British and American books. I struggled to gain meanings from some of these short stories and others I throughly enjoyed. I liked The Martyr and In a Grove best. Has anyone read other classics they enjoyed? Recommendations are always appreciated! #Rashomon #RyunosukeAkutagawa

Nothing better than a good book and a cute companion ;) I've read Rashomon a week ago and I enjoyed most of the stories, especially "hell screen". Since I read it, I'm thinking nearly every day about this story.
