A Long and Happy Life
A Long and Happy Life: A Novel | Reynolds Price
3 posts | 2 read | 6 to read
FROM ITS DAZZLING OPENING PAGE, WHICH ANNOUNCED THE appearance of a stylist of the first rank, to its moving close, this brief novel has charmed and captivated millions of readers since its original publication almost fifty years ago. The troubled love story of pretty, headstrong Rosacoke Mustian and the motorcycle-riding, stoic Wesley Beavers, A Long and Happy Life beautifully evokes a rural North Carolina now long gone. Ecstatically reviewed and winner of the William Faulkner Award for a notable first novel when it was published in 1962, A Long and Happy Life launched the career of Reynolds Price, a writer considered to be "one of our greatest novelists" (HARPER LEE).

#MagnificentMarch #Happy I read this a long time ago and remember liking it.As to the blurb The “New Mockingbird “ that‘s just advertising.😂It takes place in North Carolina, & won the William Faulkner award for best first novel.(1962)I do remember Price as a writer who writes characters who are vivid and complex.

funny, one of the 1st things I flipped to in the “Lives Of The Novelists” was Reynolds Price.I wonder often if his health had not totally collapsed, what more he would have written. These books that I kept in storage for years , I have to tell you are wonderful! Kate Vaiden was one of those books that made me realize what a good novel can tell you , what it can make you feel. The fact that he is not talked about more often is a loss to readers.

merelybookish And I've never heard of him. 😯 6y
Lcsmcat I‘ve only read this one. What else do you recommend? 6y
Leftcoastzen @Lcsmcat I haven‘t read the one you read ,love his short stories, the 2 posted here, and A generous man, this was published after a long and happy life but is a prequel. 6y

Kaye So good to hear someone else mention this author. You‘re right, he doesn‘t get the attention he should. Loved Kate Vaiden, Roxanna Slade and Blue Calhoun. All wonderful Southern stories. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Kaye glad to hear someone else has read them! forgot about Blue Calhoun. 6y
Theaelizabet @Leftcoastzen He also wrote a lovely autobiography, Clear Pictures. 6y

Suet624 I could have sworn I‘d read some of his books but looking at what he‘s written I don‘t think I have. Now I want to get his entire collection! They all look so good. 6y
Leftcoastzen @suet624 I haven‘t read them all but really enjoyed the ones I have read 6y
Suet624 Wiley Cash just posted on Twitter that James Taylor and Reynolds Price wrote the song Copperline together. 😁 6y
