Unsparingly realistic, like Salvage the Bones. Tough to read, but impossible to leave alone.

Finally got to hear Colson Whitehead speak, after his November appearance here had to be rescheduled (ice storm). The man can be funny! Who knew? #liveauthor #AAC
A gorgeous letterpress, handsewn edition of this moving short story, illustrated with woodcuts, from Larkspur Press in Kentucky. #letterpress #specialedition #woodcuts
Just finished this heart-breaking story by one of my favorite living authors. If you think you can't take one more Holocaust novel, please reconsider. This one is special.
Molly wishes me to curl up with a good book so she can snuggle.
Beautiful illustrations, brilliant poems (or "summoning spells", as the author calls them), an overall concept that includes word find puzzles and acrostics. Cannot begin to say how much I love this magnificent book.
"The fact is that gossip, rumors, mythmaking, and news stories are not appropriate vehicles for the communication of nuances of truth..."
Read this in anticipation of hearing Colson Whitehead speak tonight. Lecture has been postponed due to weather, but the book was a treat anyway.
These wonderful young readers books written by an old school friend of mine are set in and around the rural area where I grew up. #riotgrams #settingyouvebeento

I love a good many female characters, but I can't say I have one favorite. Addie Pray is right up there near the top of the list though. #riotgrams #favoritefemalecharacter

When I was a senior in high school the school librarian would not let me check out a copy of Jubilee Trail, because she said it was not appropriate for me. So if a senior couldn't read it, what was it doing in the school library? I went across the street after school and got it from the public library! #BannedBookBonanza
Lordy, lookit the size of it! #cormoranstrike #anticipation #chunkster
Name a book title that starts with each letter of your first name.
L-- Look Homeward, Angel
I-- Intruder in the Dust
N--Night
D--Darktown
A--All the King's Men
In the face of her abusive husband's violent death, 39-year-old Paula Spencer mentally processes her life, hoping to make some sense of it all, struggling to hold on to the illusion of normalcy that has kept her going for nearly two decades. It's only brilliant.
TFW you finish the first novel you've ever read by a particular author, and immediately have to buy everything he's written so far. #americanlit #newfavorite #appalachia #5stars
Gentle pacing, lovely writing, very little plot, but so many stories. The narrator needs most of his life to contemplate and try to understand the events of a 3 week sea voyage he took as a virtually unsupervised 11-year-old. Fine stuff.
A fascinating look at how animal brains work; what frightens them and how they react to fear; how to treat animals fairly, ethically and humanely while raising them to produce food--or to BE food. Grandin's perspective as an autistic human is insightful, as she believes she is capable of seeing the world more as animals do than "typical" humans are. Lots of surprising info in here, presented with wisdom, humor and heart.
Wonderful, immersive novelization of endlessly engaging Greek mythology, told by Circe, witch godess, from her island exile. From her early days as a least favored child of Helios, through her love affairs and battles with Olympians, Titans and mere men, to her ultimate choice to become her true self. Her powerful magic is sometimes monstrous, sometimes protective, always awe-inspiring. Miller's language is glorious; her book is a gift.
Loving this series of Australian police procedurals, slightly reminiscent of Tana French's style of following several characters independently.
Tim Parrish reflects on his adolescence in a blue color community in Baton Rouge in the 1970's, when he struggled with mixed messages from his family and his church about attitudes toward integration and the civil rights movement. #fear, #racism, #hypocrisy
I'm excited to read this hot-off-the-presses novel by an internet book world acquaintance.
Nifty little compendium of general knowledge about poisonous, illegal, intoxicating, invasive or just plain irritating plants. And we EAT some of them all the time! Fantastic illustrations too.
What could be better than a detective story set in Victorian London and Oxford? #notsherlock #victorianmystery
Wiley Cash has the story-telling gift. This novel is based on historical incidents in the early 20th century as union organizers attempted to bring better wages and working conditions to the textile mills of Appalachia. Unforgettable characters, excellent writing. #labor #poverty #appalachia
Excellent history exploring the consequences of being a Loyalist during the American Revolution. Lots of good stuff we didn't learn in school! #history #AmericanRevolution #BenFranklin
A fictional memoir of an escaped slave who spent a year "minding" Thoreau, at Emerson's request. If you love Walden, you'll enjoy this perspective on his experiment. If you tend to find Thoreau annoying, you'll LOVE Samuel Long's wry observations about it .
Maybe I should read this today...it's been decades. #riotgrams #getspooky
Looking forward to this one, but then there will be no more... #riotgrams #recentacquisitions
