Unsparingly realistic, like Salvage the Bones. Tough to read, but impossible to leave alone.

Beautiful illustrations, brilliant poems (or "summoning spells", as the author calls them), an overall concept that includes word find puzzles and acrostics. Cannot begin to say how much I love this magnificent book.

laytonwoman3rd I think Absalom, Absalom is Faulkner's masterpiece. But for lighter reading, The Hamlet, or The Unvanquished are very good. 6y

Leftcoastzen Wow! Guess I did not know there was a two volume biography of him . 6y
laytonwoman3rd It's definitive...published in the early '70's. I saw it in the bookstore when it came out, and bought it with grocery money. I thought I was being pretty irresponsible at the time. My only regret now is that I discarded the dust jackets! 6y

When I was a senior in high school the school librarian would not let me check out a copy of Jubilee Trail, because she said it was not appropriate for me. So if a senior couldn't read it, what was it doing in the school library? I went across the street after school and got it from the public library! #BannedBookBonanza

Gentle pacing, lovely writing, very little plot, but so many stories. The narrator needs most of his life to contemplate and try to understand the events of a 3 week sea voyage he took as a virtually unsupervised 11-year-old. Fine stuff.

A fascinating look at how animal brains work; what frightens them and how they react to fear; how to treat animals fairly, ethically and humanely while raising them to produce food--or to BE food. Grandin's perspective as an autistic human is insightful, as she believes she is capable of seeing the world more as animals do than "typical" humans are. Lots of surprising info in here, presented with wisdom, humor and heart.

Circe | Madeline Miller
post image
Pickpick

Wonderful, immersive novelization of endlessly engaging Greek mythology, told by Circe, witch godess, from her island exile. From her early days as a least favored child of Helios, through her love affairs and battles with Olympians, Titans and mere men, to her ultimate choice to become her true self. Her powerful magic is sometimes monstrous, sometimes protective, always awe-inspiring. Miller's language is glorious; her book is a gift.

Loving this series of Australian police procedurals, slightly reminiscent of Tana French's style of following several characters independently.

arubabookwoman I‘ve read and loved them all, except the last one which is still $14.99 on Kindle (too much), and my library doesn‘t have it. So I‘m starting another series by Disher, the first of which is titled #Wyatt. It‘s told from the POV of Wyatt, a savvy criminal. 7y
