Pickpick

I forgothow much I love short stories until I got an anthology curated by Hitchcock as a gift a few years back. Since then, I've kept one on hand; I use them as a #palatecleanser between novels.
This volume was another surprise - I found it it in my building's laundry room - it was a giveaway. And it was chock full of gems. There were a couple duds, of course. But I will be looking for more in this series for future short story reads🙂📚⭐️

Has anyone read this short story by Neil Gaiman? Something about it is under my skin, & I need to talk about it...

Yossarian Absolutely! What about it is bothering you? 8y
Sweettartlaura @Yossarian The narrator (I) says there are 4 who hear the story & leave the Diogenes Club. He names Paul-the-actor & Martyn; he says the one who doesn't speak until after they leave is the older man with the patches on his elbows; then there's the storyteller. Plus the narrator, isn't that 5??? Who told the story??? 8y
Yossarian The narrator told the story! In the club he says something like "One of us started telling a story," but he doesn't say who. It was him! 8y

Yossarian We were supposed to think he was implying it was the old man with the patches telling the story, but in the end we find out the old man had a different relationship to the story -- he was one of the "ghosts." 8y
Sweettartlaura Are you sure? Before that story the narrator told a different one - the one about the green hand. It seems odd he would say I told one story, and wouldn't own telling this one🤔 8y
Sweettartlaura Hmmm, @Yossarian ... I think I have to read this one again ... 🤔. But thanks for talking it over😊 8y
Yossarian "And then one of us said, 'I'll tell you a true story if you like . . ." That's all we get until the end. 8y
Yossarian He admitted telling a silly ghost story he heard at school, but didn't want to own up to the TRUE story of what really happened to him. 8y
Sweettartlaura @Yossarian Maybe I just think it's a clunky device on Gaiman's part. It's not sitting right with me😕. The math leads to what you're saying, but it only serves to befuddle me, not make me go 😮 8y
Yossarian I'd agree with that, but I tend to pick these things up. "I said" and the "Paul said" and then "Someone said." Wait, why aren't you telling us who said it? That's going to be a revealed secret later on. I liked that he tells his ghost story, but it turns out that the frame is as much a ghost story as the story itself. But I agree it was clunkily done. 8y
Sweettartlaura @Yossarian Yeah it wasn't really a reveal/didn't pay off😕. And it distracted from the old guy's reveal! THAT was the big reveal. But I found myself distracted, counting heads. Ah, well... It was only 12 pages of my life 😉 8y

So I usually keep a short story collection on hand, to read in between books, or just because.
I'm almost done with my current one...
... And before I can worry about getting the next one, look what shows up in my laundry room for the taking! It's almost as if the Universe just wants me to keep reading 🤔

What a gem❤️ Alexie, Chabon, Gaiman, King ... No filler in this volume! Can't wait to dive into it 😍📚
