Mary Coin
Mary Coin: A Novel | Marisa Silver
Bestselling author Marisa Silver takes Dorothea Langes Migrant Mother photograph as inspiration for a story of two womenone famous and one forgottenand their remarkable chance encounter. In 1936, a young mother resting by the side of the road in central California is spontaneously photographed by a woman documenting migrant laborers in search of work. Few personal details are exchanged and neither woman has any way of knowing that they have produced one of the most iconic images of the Great Depression. In present day, Walker Dodge, a professor of cultural history, stumbles upon a family secret embedded in the now-famous picture. In luminous prose, Silver creates an extraordinary tale from a brief event in history and its repercussions throughout the decades that followa reminder that a great photograph captures the essence of a moment yet only scratches the surface of a life.

“The next day, Mary walked through the rubble of their destroyed house. They had never had anything but now they had nothing. Mary realized how different those two conditions were.”

The Dust Bowl in the 1930s drove families to California, away from the destruction. The photo on this book cover was taken by Dorothea Lange, who aimed to document the lives of those unfortunate families.

Dorothea Lange‘s most famous photograph from the Depression, Migrant Mother, is the inspiration for this fictionalized tale of Mary Coin, the migrant mother herself. “Vera” is Dorothea Lange‘s counterpart and this book takes you on a journey with both Mary and Vera from 1920 to 1982, and I just loved it. It‘s very true to Dorothea‘s real background and an interesting what if. Recommended for fans of historical fiction and Dorothea Lange. 5⭐️

The photo entitled Migrant Mother is an iconic part of American history. Silver has taken that image and it's history and crafted them into a multi-generational story. Jumping between timelines and viewpoints this weaves a stark but wonderful fictional story of the people behind one of our most famous images. It's definitely an interesting prompt for writing a new story or rather re-writing an old one. Highly recommended!

Listened to this a second time and still enjoyed it very much. While many other reviewers took issue with the fictional nature of the book, I throughly enjoyed it. Writing was elegantly believable for all characters. Great review by NPR reviewer, Maureen Corrigan- https://www.npr.org/2013/02/28/172974903/dorothea-langes-migrant

Woot, the library bookstore here is awesome! Much bigger than I expected and lots of selection. I kept things reasonable and nabbed two from my TBR and Guernsey for a reread.

This book is #lies because it is a fictional account of the circumstances surrounding this picture. 100% untrue. Also 100% intriguing. #MayBookFlowers

Zelma I am really excited about this one. I almost bought it recently and then passed on it for now. But it looks so good. 7y
