32 Stories: The Complete Optic Nerve Mini-Comics | Adrian Tomine
7 posts | 10 read | 8 to read
In 1991, Adrian Tomine self-published the first issue of "Optic Nerve." Consisting of three xeroxed sheets of paper, and with a print run of twenty-five, it was a less-than-auspicious, largely unnoticed debut. In the following three years, though, Optic Nerve developed at a startlingly rapid pace: the artwork and writing evolved with each story, production quality improved, page counts increased, and by issue seven, sales had reached 6,000. In 1994, Drawn & Quarterly took over the publishing duties of "Optic Nerve," and the original seven issues sold out and were left out of print. 32 stories presents these rare, early editions, collected for the first time in a single volume.

I found this treasure in my pile of unread books. I bought the box two years ago in a comic shop in NYC and almost forgot about it ... 🙈

#day2 of #somethingforsept: books with #numbersintitle. Glaring omission: Among the Ten Thousand Things by Julia Pierpont, whom I did tons of theater with in high school. #septphotochallenge #septemberphotochallenge

Abailliekaras We're doing among the ten thousand things for book club this month! Perfect, that can be my sept photo 👌 8y
LauraBeth I loved Among The Ten Thousand Things so much ❤️ 8y
katedensen @Abailliekaras Yay! Looking forward to hearing what you think. @LauraBeth I'm so proud of Julia. There are some really funny references to our high school. 8y

A must for fans of comics/graphic novels! Lots of the material itself is fantastic especially when you consider how early it is but what makes the collection extraordinary is you get to see so much development in both art and text and general storytelling. The stories themselves tend to take the ordinary and then elevate it and some have some pretty absurd twists. The collection also replicates the original mini comics which is surprisingly fun

Some of these stories were laugh out loud funny. Others have the kick in the gut quality Tomine is known for. Of particular standout are "Smoke" and "Happy Anniversary." That said, the collection is a mixed bag, a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

As an Adrian Tomine fan, it was fascinating to watch his work grow and develop over the course of these minicomics. Great for fans of his, or as an introduction to his work.
