Exposure | Helen Dunmore
London, November, 1960: the Cold War is at its height. Spy fever fills the newspapers, and the political establishment knows how and where to bury its secrets. When a highly sensitive file goes missing, Simon Callington is accused of passing information to the Soviets, and arrested. His wife, Lily, suspects that his imprisonment is part of a cover-up, and that more powerful men than Simon will do anything to prevent their own downfall. She knows that she too is in danger, and must fight to protect her children. But what she does not realise is that Simon has hidden vital truths about his past, and may be found guilty of another crime that carries with it an even greater penalty.

The setting for this novel is London during the Cold War. The story revolves around two men who work at the Admiralty and a file that goes missing. No doubt the author was inspired by the true saga of Kim Philby and others in British intelligence who were moles for the USSR. Even though the story is fictional, it moves right along and becomes a page turner. Very satisfying ending. 5 out of 5 stars.

1960s London. Height of the Cold War. In a garden in Muswell Hill a wife & mother buries a suitcase her husband was asked to rescue from a friend/colleague's house.

I really liked this novel; good story line moving fast, characters I could be sympathetic to, and the ending rounded things off suitably and wasn't too far fetched. Well worth a read 🖒

Mehso-so

I raced through this cold war thriller, but i can't say it changed my life. An easy, slightly unsatisfactory read, more character development needed!

(with early daffs and our new bright therapy lamp which i hope is going to change my partner's life...)

I've never done reading challenges until this month, the thing I'm most getting used to is having several books on the go at once. You're all pros! Starting this one on the tube this morning... #chutesandladders

This book felt so British--very restrained. Not so much a spy story as a story about the consequences of one act and its effect on the people involved.

The photo has nothing to do with this blurb. I wanted to take a photo of something else but had cat paralysis because she was sitting on me! I chose Exposure for the title because it stayed with me this month.

The twist of this one: someone would rather confess falsely to being a spy during the Cold War than let it be known that he had a gay affair many years before. Even in a period piece, I have a hard time with the homophobia.

brendanmleonard Whoa. For 2016, that's a bit much. 9y

Last minute brush up for today's lit festival event with Helen Dunmore. A wonderful book about secrets and lies and the ghosts of war in the Cold War.
"They were so certain then. Nothing had touched them. What they believed was as fresh as a sheet of paper with nothing written on it."

bedandabook Absolutely loved this book; a thoughtful and gentle Cold War thriller. 9y
peggyriley She read so beautifully from it. Such pace, such heart. I have to read everything now. 9y

After doing a favor for an old colleague, a British secret agent gets caught in the crosshairs of a conspiracy and his family suffers the consequences .

It's a spy story with very little cloak and dagger, but its domestic focus is cleverly written and riveting throughout.

MyBookLife Sounds good!! I read A Spell of Winter a few months back. Have you that one? 9y
LibrarianMike773 This was my first by this author. I enjoy spy novels so I thought I'd give it a try. I liked her writing style so maybe I'll try another by her someday 9y

peggyriley It's a good, solid read with plenty of heart. Really looking forward to a good Cold War chat. Any questions? 9y
