Hip Hop Family Tree Book 1: 1975-1981
Hip Hop Family Tree Book 1: 1975-1981 | Ed Piskor
5 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
The lore of the early days of hip hop has become the stuff of myth, so what better way to document this fascinating, epic true story than in another great American mythological medium the comic book? From exciting young talent and self-proclaimed hip hop nerd Ed Piskor, acclaimed for his hacker graphic novel Wizzywig, comes this explosively entertaining, encyclopedic history of the formative years of the music genre that changed global culture. Originally serialized on the hugely popular website Boing Boing, The Hip Hop Family Tree is now collected in a single volume cleverly presented and packaged in a style mimicking the Marvel comics of the same era. Piskor s exuberant yet controlled cartooning takes you from the parks and rec rooms of the South Bronx to the night clubs, recording studios, and radio stations where the scene started to boom, capturing the flavor of late-1970s New York City in panels bursting with obsessively authentic detail. With a painstaking, vigorous and engaging Ken Burns meets- Stan Lee approach, the battles and rivalries, the technical innovations, the triumphs and failures are all thoroughly researched and lovingly depicted. plus the charismatic players behind the scenes like Russell Simmons, Sylvia Robinson and then-punker Rick Rubin. Piskor also traces graffiti master Fab 5 Freddy s rise in the art world, and Debbie Harry, Keith Haring, The Clash, and other luminaries make cameos as the music and culture begin to penetrate downtown Manhattan and the mainstream at large. Like the acclaimed hip hop documentaries Style Wars and Scratch, The Hip Hop Family Tree is an exciting and essential cultural chronicle and a must for hip hop fans, pop-culture addicts, and anyone who wants to know how it went down back in the day."

This was an interesting overview of the start of the hiphop music genre. I learned a bit, but so much went over my head due to constant name-dropping with little to no explanation of why that person is important. If you aren‘t already familiar with all of these music artists and DJs, you won‘s get as much out of this book. It wasn‘t as good of an introduction as I had anticipated. #MusicHistory #NonfictionComic #Comics

Am I listening to the Spotify playlists I found for the nonfiction comic I'm reading right now? Yes. Is it the most 70s music I've ever heard? Also yes. #BookPlaylist #MusicHistory #Nonfiction

IndoorDame I read that comic like 10 years ago, and I think I‘d have gotten WAY more out of it if I‘d had access to Spotify back then 1y
Kenyazero @IndoorDame I could definitely see that! I am not familiar with any of these artists, and this playlist has really helped me get an idea of what their styles were like. It's also fun hearing the music and learning about its context at the same time. 1y

I loved this graphic non-novel, but it comes with a couple of caveats: first, if you aren‘t a dyed-in-the-wool hip hop fan, this may not be for you; second, if you‘re not interested in learning about ALL of the personalities involved in making hip hop what it is today, this may not be for you; finally, if you‘re looking for more detail (and perhaps fewer characters) about each artist and his or her ⬇️

gradcat ⬆️ (Cont.) contribution to the form, then this may not be for you. To read the history of hip hop in graphic form is fantastic, but I found myself more than once looking for more detail about the early progenitors on their websites or other sites. Still, the art is fantastic and it‘s great fun if this is your jam. 5y
Cinfhen Hi!!! Awesome review 😎👍🏻I‘m sure the art would win out for me too♥️ 5y

gradcat @Crazeedi I‘ve had company for the weekend, so I‘ve been a bit tied up. I did send you a longish email, before I sent the one where I had you down for the wrong birthday month—I hope you got it! I‘m only just now posting my review for the buddy read. Can you believe it?? 😂 5y
Crazeedi @gradcat I'm sure I got it and probably didn't respond, so sorry! I had a couple rough days!! 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi How thoughtless I can be sometimes! So sorry...I haven‘t even asked how you are doing. I really hope everything is okay. Are you feeling well? ♥️ 5y

Bit to much name-dropping in this one, for my taste. The artwork is fantastic, but the storytelling was so-so. Not sure if I will read the next to volumes in this series.

Disclaimer: I know almost nothing about hip hop or rap. Although the medium is graphic nonfic, I feel like I learned a lot! There's so much info, that I felt, at times, overwhelmed. But, I did start a new playlist!
