Pickpick

I set myself my own version of my favourite challenge #booked given it is not, for understandable reasons running. My husband and I had fun setting date related challenges and my book of poetry for WH Auden birthday was an enigma. I find poetry super intimidating but was pleased with this choice. The structure of many of the poems are deceptively simple (4 line verses, mostly alternating rhyme) but there were many poems here that will stick ⬇️

Itchyfeetreader The aurhor writes with wit but also real heart and there is an underlying sense of ‘sad but will work out okay‘ here. With that level of literary analysis I am sure no one is surprised as to why I didn‘t follow English literature beyond gcse ! 1mo
dabbe As a former high school English teacher, don't sell yourself short! As a student, I hated dissecting a poem to death. As a teacher, I hated making kids do that. Overall, poetry is meant to be enjoyed and FELT. No poet ever wanted his/her/their poem analyzed to death. I love your thoughts on this book of poems, and am so glad you're embracing poetry. Don't be afraid of it; you know so much more than you think you do #IMHO. 💚💙💚 1mo
Itchyfeetreader Thank you @dabbe I love that advice to feel@the poems 1mo

#tlt not a resolution sort of person BUT right now on my mind are,
1️⃣get work & life a better balance 2️⃣ be more active - open to what that looks like 3️⃣ read more intentionally. I always loved #booked for forcing me to try new things & have done versions of #mounttbr. This year my own challenge in the vein of booked which I want to meet https://app.thestorygraph.com/reading_challenges/0f914e97-3b02-4b25-a51b-32dc722...

dabbe I'm not either because I rarely finish them, but I tried to keep mine realistically doable--like yours! 💙❄️💙 4mo

Thanks to all who participated in #Booked2023 and the other years. It‘s been a wonderful ride!

We planned to retire the challenge at year‘s end, but with the state of the world and our personal challenges, we must step away sooner.

There will be no final drawing. Feel free to continue the challenge in your personal reading choices for the rest of the year.

Bookwormjillk Thanks for hosting. Hugs to you all. 6mo
Librarybelle Thank you for hosting this, along with @Cinfhen and @alisiakae ! I‘ve not actively submitted for the drawings - it‘s been more fun to go through this on my own. Thanks for coming up with prompts that have stretched my reading. And thank you for all of the hard work that went into this challenge. 6mo

Singout Many thanks from me too: I‘ve been enjoying this since I joined Litsy in 2020! It‘s pushed me to read a few new things, and given me some structure in my somewhat isolated life. Sending empathy for those of you who are particularly struggling with the crises in the world right now. 6mo

I hope you & your loved ones are ok-sending you love and hope for you and your family. (edited) 6mo

1. Bahaha. I was doing great on readalongs and all challenges except read harder before this month (was even considering lapping #pop23 for something to do!) but being away from home made me crave something comforting and I‘ve just been binging Murderbot for the past couple weeks instead 😅😝
2. I guess Murderbot on repeat is my new jam… but really, I think I‘ll actually manage #booked 2nd quarter‘s sub and then catch up on the rest! #two4tuesday

TheSpineView Love Murderbot! Thanks for playing 10mo

Took this idea from @BarbaraBB and decided to post my #52Books23 challenge progress 😊
I‘ve read 44 out of 52 prompts 😌I‘d say MOST were picks with very few duds🤩

LeeRHarry That‘s amazing! I have read 14 but I‘ll get there 😄 13mo

TrishB Brilliant 👍🏻 13mo
ravenlee Hooray! I‘m at the point where my choices have to be more carefully chosen now, instead of relying on coincidence. Think I‘ve read 30/52. 13mo
AshleyHoss820 Excellent reading so far! It‘s so nice that it‘s been good reading overall, too! 🎉🎉🎉 13mo
Cinfhen I love these challenges as it helps dictate my reading and introduced me to several new authors @AshleyHoss820 @ravenlee @TrishB @Suet624 @Librarybelle @LeeRHarry 13mo
Deblovestoread Wow! I‘m at 21. Some of my planning includes doubling up with #Booked throughput the year. 13mo
Cinfhen I tried to #DoubleDip @Deblovestoread or even sneak in a #TriplePlay or #GrandSlam as often as possible 😉 it‘s part of the fun 😂 13mo
BarbaraBB You‘re almost done already! Some great reads there! 13mo
squirrelbrain Wow, you‘ve read loads! ❤️ 13mo
Bluebird Amazing progress! You‘ll be done soon! I‘m at 21 now, but i‘ve read most of the easy prompts so it will be tougher going forward 13mo
LaraReads This is so fantastic! Wowzers! 13mo
Cinfhen Other than #octaviabutler and #ABookEveryoneHasRead im in pretty good shape with the remaining prompts @BarbaraBB @squirrelbrain @Bluebird @LaraReads there are definitely a few trickier prompts but luckily I was able to borrow from online sources like #Scribd and #Libby 😁 13mo
BarbaraBB There will be few books everyone has read but you 😛 13mo
Cinfhen I might have to try again with Harry Potter @BarbaraBB ⚡️👓🧹 13mo
Bklover How was The House Is On Fire? That one sounds interesting 🤔 12mo

Pickpick

I read this pick from my #AuldLangSpines list from @Cinfhen and it was so good. It was well written and helped me learn about the healthcare workers who fought the virus so hard. The last chapter of this book, written before COVID-19, was pretty prescient about the pandemic to come. I‘m not sure if this Ebola outbreak was technically a pandemic or an epidemic but I‘m counting it for #Booked about a pandemic

Cinfhen Definitely counts as a pandemic 😷 I thought this was a terrific first hand account - some parts made me SO ANGRY 😡 1y
MallenNC @Cinfhen Yes! Especially the part where the Doctors Without Borders people were debating whether or not to use the drug on the doctor and they didn‘t. And I was sad for all the nurses. 1y
Cinfhen OMG! I was SO FURIOUS over that too!!! I didn‘t feel their rationale made any sense. It was so heartless 1y
See All 6 Comments
MallenNC @Cinfhen I didn‘t understand it either. They seemed to weigh the pros and cons but then they just never decided and didn‘t even tell him to give him a chance to have an opinion. Awful. 1y
Megabooks @Cinfhen @MallenNC yes, I felt the ethics of DWB was quite questionable in that instance! 1y
MallenNC @Megabooks Definitely questionable. It made the organization seem more focused on their reputation than medical care. 1y

Pickpick

1600s remote Norway where inhabitants rely on the sea. The men of the village are shipwrecked and the women are left to carry on without husbands, brothers, fathers. They are doing fine until an outsider comes to their shores and begins accusing women of witchcraft. I liked the story but I listened to the audiobook which matched the tone of the book, but a bit flat.
completes my 1st #booked reading challenge! #booked2023 #nonpatriarchalsociety

Chelsea.Poole @Cinfhen @alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage -- thanks for hosting! Looking forward to next year :) 1y
Cinfhen Yay!!!! Congrats 🎊🍾🎈 and we now have the link up to enter the 4th quarter drawing : Here's the short URL to the form: https://forms.gle/sMyR1gVJciu1HqkA9 1y
